Even if 1,000 dissident right blogs are being run off mainstream VPS hosts that will take them down if somebody bitches enough, it's still way more decentralized than relying on Substack to host them all and requires adversaries to attack at a much more granular and therefore tedious level. If you make your adversaries work harder for it, at lot more of them won't bother.

There are actually still some networks of dudes using Blogspot in this way that I know about. They tend to be pretty old, so I wouldn't expect them to change anytime soon. They're so underground that they've gone under the radar for decades at this point, but eventually they'll be caught and purged.

None of this really has to be all that difficult.https://landchad.net/ <-- this guy has some good tutorials, but even what he has is too complex for most people who just want to host a blog. It's really just:1. Rent a domain name from somewhere that isn't gay (increasingly difficult)2. Rent a VPS from somewhere that isn't gay (again, increasingly difficult)3. Add a DNS record for the IP of the VPS you just got4. SSH in (this may be tougher to explain to newcomers especially with keyfiles)5. Install Caddy and do like 3 lines of config6. Install Hugo locally7. Create a post with Hugo with simple Markdown syntax and build the site8. Transfer the built site to the correct location on the VPS with SCP or Rsync9. Verify that the site is up and automagically TLS-securedOkay, so maybe not *that* easy, but to someone who's reasonably intelligent and willing to put a little bit of work in to learn, not an impassable mountain.And of course, if they're willing to do the initial steps to install WriteFreely then they don't even need to use Markdown and build/transfer the site.

The problem is that most people on the internet have been trained to think of big sites as "the internet" and little one-off sites as "weird, unpopular, potentially dangerous" places. Even here on fedi, the tendency is for new users to join the big instances.It takes a curious kind of person who is willing to step out of his comfort zone of likes, subscribes, follows, and "recommended for you" in order for small sites to be discovered, and that kind of person seems increasingly rare.

@Hoss @narada @trogdor It's not just that, but also something very important IMO.Let's just say you're in a group that has a group of adversaries who want you broke, dead, in jail, your kids brainwashed, your family members slandering you, and they think it's funny. Something like Gab, Truth Social, or even Poast is a wet dream for them.It's a single point of failure, a single website to dox people on, a single website that can take down groups when they feel like it all at once, in lockstep. In the case of the Chitwood saga, it's even a honeypot.And that's not even the best part, these sites aside from being easy targets to pressure are huge targets for any washed up skid who wants to make a name for himself on infosec Twitter. There's a high reward (taking out a "Nazi hub") combined with a low barrier (you're hacking boomers online who can't into computers and in the case of Gab, probably paid a bunch of Indians to maintain the code). So setting up on a centralized walled garden known for certain people signing up is asking for trouble. The oldtroons already know. They already have their own WordPress setup going, and they either did it out of habit or to avoid tech censorship of the time. Someone like Kevin MacDonald after being banned from Twitter.com simply went to his own blog which has been going for years. But those newer to this part of the web (the ex-Facebook Boomers, zoomers addicted to controlled platforms) want their walled garden back. It's also about visibility too, the people who masturbate to the idea of doxing someone for the thrill of it won't know about your little blog until you come to their attention. They'll find you on Twitter, but not some fedi instance as of now.

One old political blogger for example talked about his tricks to getting big, which is quite different from how to get big on Twitter/similar in many ways, with the dream goal being to get in someone's blogroll tab.
