It is essential to stop using Chrome. Under the pretense of saving users from third-party spyware, Google is creating an ecosystem in which Chrome itself is the spyware.Given Google's overwhelming presence in the browser market, this is unconscionable. We should all despise the ad-tech business, and have no sympathy for the companies getting whacked by Google's actions. But we should not permit one monopolist to replace them all.

@erikSettle for less, for reason. I'm serious... I've personally had few problems with sites, more with all the blockers. But there's other browsers. I'm serious. The unquestioned demand for continuous peak experience is a trap. I suggest questioning it when cornered by bad choices. And hope mozilla gets their shit together. @dangillmor

@dangillmor here's the fun thing. I had a friend who had a problem with his laptop. The laptop ran so slowly and it kept crashing for no reason. Then I uninstalled Google Chrome and voila. The ram usage went down from 99% to 45%. This shows that Chrome was doing something "shady" in the background. And You should know that Chrome collects data about everything you do on chrome even if you use priv window or extensions and you can't disable it from self updating. What an evil spyware it is.

@yaygya Apple receives about 20 billion per year from Google, via their search deal. Hence, it is safe to say that Safari's development is entirely funded by Google's ads. This doesn't imply that Safari or WebKit wouldn't survive, should the Google deal end. But until then, Apple, despite their deep and diversified pockets, would be fools to bite the hand that feeds them. For example, given the search deal, do you ever see a Safari that blocks any of Google's search ads? Nope. 😉@jesuisatire

@dangillmor Remember, folks. "In the name of open-source collaboration" Google raised a middle finger to WebKit and forked it to be Blink, the engine powering Chrome, Chromium, and about 90% of the ecosystem including Microsoft Edge. They're rather successfully stealing plays from Microsoft's book, harkening back to the Internet Explorer days. "Embrace, extend, extinguish". [Thanks Brian!]Monopoly.Quite the contrast to Apple's day-0 KHTML/WebKit philosophy. https://marc.info/?l=kfm-devel&m=104197092318639

I'll add an important note: KHTML was heavily tied to Qt, especially in memory management. Apple's initial effort was largely to divorce the layout & rendering engine (and JSCore) from Qt.There was actual reason to fork.Chrome's multi-process isolation model was, theoretically, a relatively good reason to require a fork rather than contribute patches, except…WebKit2.From 2010.Ground-up abstracted design.Strict process isolation.
