One is only safe once back inside the compound. Then you erase the memory. But thrive on the dissonance, how awful they were, how much they wanted to destroy you. Cults thrive on hate. @RustyBertrand (serious question) What puzzles me is that normally intelligent, often competent, successful adults (not just young, impressionable youth) get pulled into cults. I feel like I’m smart enough not to fall for TFG’s cult of personality. But so many (70 million!) others (many of whom are much more intelligent than me) do. Can you help explain this situation?

@RustyBertrand @Fred_Hymans Is there a known repeatable mental process that we can use to defend?For example, I liked Jordan Peterson for 5 minutes, I liked Ayn Rand for about 20 minutes, and I still like the 4 horsemen (hitch, dennet, dawkins, harris).But for any of the above, if I become uncomfortable with too many aspects of their philosophy, I'll start to pick and choose portions while rejecting others.What I'm looking for is a reverse "Jesus prayer".

@jay_chi The book "Life 102: What To Do When Your Guru Sues You" by Peter McWilliams is about going into, and out the other side of, groups that exploit. Might be a cult, a religion, a relationship, a business, a politics, a therapy, some of each.The group he wrote about sued, won, and all copies of the book were to be removed from circulation... but copies of the book are still out there.
