@dbazuin @CheRosach Reminds me of one of those vox-pop interviews I have a recollection of:- Location edge of Lake DistrictInterviewer: "What do you think about the posibility of wind turbines here?"Member of public: "I don't find them too intrusive, and anyway if they become a problem you can unbolt them and put them somewhere else, unlike that" (points to Sellafield off on the horizon)

@ekes @dbazuin @CheRosach Sure, sure. Never mind that it takes many thousands sites the size of the one at Sellafield to generate as much power from wind as the UK's nuclear plants do.

@publius @ekes @dbazuin @CheRosach but the environmental impacts of a nuclear power station’s construction, operation, maintenance & decommissioning supply chain will be much bigger & affect many parts of the world.

@leafn4give @ekes @dbazuin @CheRosach Per unit of power supplied, the environmental impacts of nuclear are MUCH smaller. That's well known and has been for a long time. Renewable energy projects require lots of land, lots of concrete, lots of steel, lots of copper even ― it takes far more to wind 300 10 MW alternators than one 1000 MW unit. Nuclear units last longer, too.The ExternE and NewExt projects at the University of Stuttgart studied this extensively.http://www.externe.info/externe_d7/

@CheRosach @leafn4give @ekes @dbazuin I understand that decommissioning of wind facilities is a serious problem.Whereas nuclear plants are required to build up a fund for the purpose during operation, which adds about 1% to the cost of generation, wind operators are allowed to "self-bond" meaning they say they're good for it. And then (the exact same thing happens in the coal industry) the project is sold off to a holding company that declares bankruptcy, leaving the public on the hook.
