       @Moon @jeffowski Fun taxi (and union!) fact:In Montreal in 1969 the Montreal police union went on actual "we're not working anymore at all" strike. Now, you would expect all sorts of unsavory types to start criming harder with the police out of the equation right? What ended up being the main event? A taxi driver gang war.

       @feld @jeffowski this entire structure is down to the cities regulation of the industry.On the other hand, I've been surprised at the lack of cab coops as app dev and tech have matured. Madison is all I know. Maybe Austin.

Green Cab, Capitol Cab, Badger Cab... maybe another?One time after a work Xmas party where we all got drunk as fuck down at the Come Back Inn I stood in their parking lot in the snow for TWO HOURS because no cab would show up to pick up our group. Dispatch kept giving me the runaround. This was before Uber/Lyft was in the city. They kept telling me the cab was on the way and they just never showed up.

       @Moon @jeffowski Taxis weren't ruined by unions, but by the cities imposing a kickback-based medallion systems and set-fares for airports, etc. Where ever Democrats Machines rule, bribery is on the menu. Total bribery. Taxis were in shit condition because you get maximum ROI driving them into pieces. NY found a solution, sell the beaters to other cities.
