I recently stumbled upon the /r/flashflight subreddit, while searching for a running light. These guys are intense. And yet, there's a part of me that's intrigued. But what do they do, look at stuff in the dark all day?https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/

@jorijn Basically the nicest subreddit I've ever been in. Everybody just wants everybody to have the best flashlight experience possible

@vees I have this weird urge to buy a flashlight right now. I love gadgets. But what then? I don't go camping all that often. :-D

@jorijn Not sure how old you are but my dark vision went off a cliff after I turned 40, so I use a high-CRI flashlight around the house all the time just to find stuff

@vees not old enough for those problems. I have a Garmin watch with a flashlight that I use quite often. It can switch between bright white LEDs, and a soft red LED.

@vees @jorijn I have started carrying an Olight 3Ti with me everywhere for this reason. Much better than a phone flashlight, plus it has a 2-direction pocket clip. I use it way more than I thought I would. I already had a bunch of low self-discharge NiMH AAA's to power it so no additional costs.

@cetan @jorijn I carry a Leatherman tool most places anyway so adding a 18650 flashlight that was roughly the same size was not a stretch.

@vees @jorijn I can't yet bring myself to buy a flashlight that requires a rechargeable battery. Despite the many other devices I have that require charging, my brain just refuses to give up AA and AAA as power sources for flashlights and headlamps. Eventually they'll probably be relegated to a very limited selection but for now I'm going to be the "kids these days!" guy. 😆

@cetan @jorijn You can do baby steps to a dual-fuel light like a Tool AA 2.0 that takes AA and 14500 just in case.

@vees Good point. Also, I think this discussion is approaching what @jorijn was referring to as "intense." LOL It's good though, because you wouldn't think that something as mundane as a flashlight could be specialized but they really have become like multitools or SAKs.

@vees any recommendations on a dual-fuel that doesn't have a strobe function? I find that addition to flashlights the most aggravating change of all.
