@lain public housing can be funny:“There were enormous problems, especially in the early stages when we resettled farmers and others from almost rent-free wooden squatter huts with no water, power, or modern sanitation, and therefore no utility bills, into high-rise dwellings with all these amenities but also a monthly bill to pay. It was a wrenching experience for them in personal, social, and economic terms.Difficult adjustments were inevitable and there were comic, even absurd, results. Several pig farmers could not bear to part with their pigs and reared them in their high-rise apartments. Some were seen coaxing their pigs up the stairs! One family, a couple with 12 children moving from a hut to a new HDB apartment at Old Airport Road, brought a dozen chickens and ducks to rear in the kitchen . The mother built a wooden gate at the kitchen entrance to stop them from entering the living room. In the evenings, the children would look for earthworms and insects at the grass patches outdoors for feed . They did this for 10 years until they moved into another apartment.”From Third World to First - Lee Kuan Yew

Notice the second image is zoomed into the building. The commieblocks are usually surrounded by space for public use, parks, greenery. The suburbs are just suburbs as far as the eye can see; nearest public amenities being a ~0.5hr drive away; because that is the only way that low density housing can work and fit everyone in.

It is strange as roads don't conform to the landscape as they did historically even when it would benefit the health of the city for them to do so. China especially suffers from this affliction but you can see it anywhere new roads are planned. They seem to be made for a model to minimize congestion, which does nothing but encourage it paradoxically.

@rher @lain @SuperDicq @wholemilk Having made road plans previously I have hands on experience with some of that. Budget and safety factors are the two main considerations for roads put in. And yeah bigger nicer roads invite more traffic to them and off all the narrower beaten up roads which causes congetion. There is design consideration avoid altering drainage basins and keep water that was historically draining to one area still going that way but there is only so much we can do and also make a road and its ditches, ect. fit.

It's a flaw with cities that the people who found and make it work are eventually outbred by people coming in from the countryside to the ever expanding city. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution this process sped up considerably. You can see it in Glasgow, where the Irish outnumber the Scots 2 to 1 or really any city here with any ethnic combination you desire.

@rher @lain @SuperDicq @wholemilk Ah, I want to say the one time eugenics movement of the US tried to intervene in such trends. They had a simple aim of encouraging poorer households to only have 3 children and the norm was 5-7 and encourage wealthier children to also have 3 children where the norm was 1 maybe 2. The aim to better propagate the genes for drive and intelligence that made the best folks wealthy and relieve some of the over burden poorer houses tended to carry with feeding more children.

@rher @dassauerkraut @lain @SuperDicq @wholemilk This could be true in localised scenarios, but when you reach levels of rainfall and inundation where public drainage systems actually become crucial to moving water away, infiltration (water seeping into the ground from where it lands) is essentially a negligible factor.More natural road material helps a lot with temperature regulation though, something that is severely overlooked in some parts of the world.

@rher @lain @SuperDicq @wholemilk 1. Asphalt is cheap, smol busted up rock, and petroleum biproduct. Lots of politics in pressing for it to remain in use even though its awful environmentally, like a small oil spill for the roads surrounding ditches and creeks when its put down.2. Bricks/block suuuck to drive on even with modern cars, and are more manual to maintain then just running a machine over a flat road to resurface it.It is a design requirement in most places though to maintain so much square footage for water retention/drainage. Lots of lots and commercial districts have big ponds because they are overpaved and had to compensate somewhere. A greenscaping trend would be great but would require alot of political sway, and alot more money dedicated to infrastructre. As well as a movement to make more cities and reduce population densities.

Either I cook it day of or it goes into the freezer and takes a major, permanent hit to its quality. Vegetables will only last a couple days as well. Green onions or baby bok choy after like 3 days are basically inedible. @SuperDicq @lain @Paultron we have some of the nicest outdoor places in the world, just none of them are in cities. we'd rather see our state and national parks than the side of generic modern styled commercial building #5456435678 that's been copied and pasted across hundreds of cities.and then there's the weather, it's just never going to be pleasant to walk around Minnesota in January or Phoenix in July.

@Tsuki @lain @SuperDicq @Paultron well so is driving to one in a place with good road infrastructure. i can't think of anywhere in Europe this would apply to, all their cities were already built for hundreds if not thousands of years before cars were even invented, so everything about it is going to be annoying, from the traffic problems to the narrow roads to the shortage of parking.

@Paultron @lain @SuperDicq short trips only cause problems if you do nothing but trips too short for your oil & other fluids to warm up for months on end. nobody wants chocolate milk oil from not getting hot enough to burn off condensation, but you can just change it sooner.despite Biden's best efforts, burning a little bit of gas to drive 3 miles isn't some huge financial burden.i get the white or yellow onions and they last a long time.

@skylar @lain @SuperDicq white, yellow and green onions all have different applicationsyellow for european, american, and mexican cooking into sauces, white for toppings on hot dog or burg, green onion rings from the green part for asian food topping, the white part of the green onion minced with aromatics for asian and some french recipes

I imagine a good middle ground exists somewhere and there's always the option of living more rural. As it is American cities are awful for both driving and walking.

@SuperDicq @lain @Paultron @Tsuki it's been a long time since i've seen a newish truck with a bench seat, even regular cabs are pretty rare anymore.there's probably some safetycucks whining about seats being allowed to exist without 400 separate air bags and other nonsense, but it's mostly that the cheap work truck has been brutally murdered by auto manufacturers. if you're spending 50 grand either way, it damn well better come with the world's comfiest seat.

@SuperDicq @lain @skylar it's not snobbery they have very different flavors. red are quite piquant and are most useful raw in salads, whereas yellow is more mild and suitable for building with for savory flavorsand green are p much a vaguely related vegetable that can do some of the same things in its own way. i definitely use both yellow and green in the same dishes at times

@sapphire @skylar @Tsuki @lain @SuperDicq yeah back around white sands we had issues with euros wandering off the trail and dying or running out of gas on the highway between two far apart townsit's kind of tough to think about how there is NOTHING there to find and no one to help you when you have lived in Europe all your life. Like you might intellectually know it but on a gut level you seemingly have to experience it to internalize it

One of the greatest lies of our era is that our society is enriched if everybody gets equal access to all information. There's a large contingent of people who are smart enough to read but too dumb to critically analyze the information they just consumed, and letting those people access whatever material they want has deleterious effects on societal wellbeing.
