it does makes sense though, since being a SAHM for a long time was a privilege of upper class women who truly did nothing because they hired housekeepers to cook, clean and do the laundry

the concept of a SAHM who takes care of the children and the house is pretty new. Low class women always worked, while middle and upper class women hired housekeepers to do all the boring chores

hiring a young woman to do the cleaning, laundry and cooking was a common practice in Italy until the 60s, even for low-middle class families. It was never the "mom" job unless the family very poor, but even in that case the chores were shared with the older children and not just the mom job

cleaning and laundry has always been the woman job in the sense that they hired female servants to do it. I don't know about cooking, but I'm sure a lot of men were hired to do it ("famous requested chefs" were a thing among European courts).Taking care of the kids was also obviously the job of female servants (for nobles and rich families). In poor families the women did both house chores and worked a job.My point is mainly about SAHM being a recent concept. I'm not denying certain chores have always been assigned to women

@RikaDerufu @Senator_Armstrong I'm just pointing out the other alternatives that existed long before even the middle ages. Rich households in antiquity had a bunch of slaves, and instead of pay they did receive housing, an allowance to do their own food shopping and even time to look after their family.

@RikaDerufu @Dicer @Senator_Armstrong You cannot convince me that 4/5ths of households had servants to do all their chores. Unless you consider the servants a part of the household they serve in, and in that case they would be their own servant, which doesn't make sense. The majority of people, both in and outside the towns, must have been without servants.

servants were most of the time part of the household. It surely must have been a common practice for hundreds of years because all the low class women (married or non) who didn't work in a farm worked as housekeeping servants in the households of richer people. Mind that this was considered a good position, because the alternative for unmarried women or women who couldn't live with their families was prostitution. The industrialization brought a lot of women into factories, but it has been a common practice to have housekeepers at least until the 50s/60s of the 20th century.

these women lived in the attic or basement of the household, together with their own children. This means that the family children and servants children were growing up together, although obviously separated to a certain degree. There is a common way of saying in the dialect from the place I come from that goes "Chi so mi? El fiol de la serva?" translated it means "Who am I? The son/daughter of the servant?". It's used when you feel you are getting mistreated by your parents or relatives.

@RikaDerufu @Dicer @Senator_Armstrong You cannot have the upper classes hire almost half the working class as house servants. There are simply not that many chores to be done.>all the low class women (married or non) who didn't work in a farm Ah, yes. Excluding ~70% of the working class women. And even in towns there are usually ways they can assist their husband's or father's work and duties.

The main point that I'm assuming you missed is that being a SAHM is a relatively new concept related to our higher standards of living (doing house chores is not as tedious as it was many years ago, so you don't really need to hire other people to do it most of the time) and a new way of seeing house chores (we see them as a our duty and not a filthy thing we need to relegate to other people as soon we have the money to do it)

@RikaDerufu Why not? If you live rurally, it is almost entirely possible, and if you do not then the physical workload is simply smaller and the women will have more free time. Alternatively there is room for more time spent on house chores and raising children, so a larger house or family can be maintained than previously.

I think there's a lot going on in the whole discourse regarding this.If the woman is working full time, if she has a social life, if the kids/husband help with the chores, if she actually enjoys being in a tidy clean space or sees cleaning as a useless chore, if she has pre-existing mental health problems. The relationship with the husband and the kids also matter. If you have shit relationships with them you won't ever feel happy as a sahm. If you work full time and do most of the house chores but you also have a loving relationship with your partner and kids you probably feel 1/10 of the stress the sahm feels.

Considering that working in the farm was not only for self-sustaining but also to be able to sell the products, I think we have to consider it a job.SAHMs don't do anything for money.A 14th century farm woman is more comparable to a part time working mother of today I believe

@RikaDerufu Of course they did, that is also what I just suggested - selling produce, although depending on where in the world the peasant family worked, they might just be tenants. Paid a wage to grow the crops and tend the animals, and the actual selling was done by another hireling of the landowner, if not the landowner himself.

@Jens_Rasmussen @RikaDerufu The entire idea that women should be competing with men, and thus are "less useful" is entirely because of idiotic feminist logic (much of the worst of it coming from jews like Dworkin, Steinem, etc) and corporate greed. The latter of which can be blamed on jews, but then I am reminded of non-jew capitalists that called out jews also dipping into acquiring cheap, non-White labor against White commoner interests (like Henry Ford) so idk maybe they'd eventually push women into doing more traditionally men's jobs and mix up the workforce so that most job sites are a mix of sexes.

@lichelordgodfrey @RikaDerufu Immigrants work for cheap, and a larger workforce (that is, by including women into it) also drives down wages, but I guess that the managerial people were spreadsheet-brained* long before excel was a thing.*Assuming that 1 worker equals 1 worker, no matter their gender or race
