Two year plan, I've decided to move to and buy a house in a small town in southern Mississippi.My younger sister (who I would take a bullet for) is moving there soon. Her son, my nephew (a rock, who I would also take a bullet for), is on the police force there. He was also here as a teacher in VN for several years and has a Vietnamese wife and four beautiful children.So, a home in the Highlands here where FIL will live and a home in MS where MIL will live. Stable. Basics. Idyllic.

@StevenDouglas Cool. We may bump into each other one day. I live in Gulfport MS. My family moved from Greenville MS toGulfport when I was 4. I’ve been here since then. Other than the humid weather in the summer - I love it. Ppl are friendly here.

@MarcusJ65 I was Biloxi for AF tech school in 77-78. Loved Gulfport and Biloxi. And I'm in Saigon, already acclimatized to humidity and heat, I barely notice it.

@barrsniffsatjejuneanalysis @EarlThePearls And, to be blunt, there's a major fear element. If I die, she thinks she's screwed. Family here is poor and of little help. My family there is a whopper of a safety net. That's most where the 'passion' element comes from, as her friends feed those fears constantly.

@StevenDouglas @EarlThePearls Did I read correctly it is a two year plan? It is very expensive in housing and groceries here. You know this though, of course, but that sounds more solid than coming now IMHO. My son and daughter are thinking about moving back from Scotland, and I was like yeeh, maybe give it another 2 years if you can get work Visas extended. When we visited them, were gobsmacked at differences in prices at pubs, groceries store, etc, and simple but okay hotel in good area.

@barrsniffsatjejuneanalysis @EarlThePearls Another nice thing about rural/small towns - small swings in prices. And my path to the housing market there won't be typical of many I know. There are myriad houses 'on the market', that nobody knows about - sometimes not even the owner (until approached). Auction or for sale by owner only, get to know everyone and the area, zero hurry to buy. I WILL get a decent plot for a song. The big investment in the future house, not the land.

@EarlThePearls "Small town close to the countryside will be good."Countryside next to a small town that's close to a medium-sized city will be even better. I want arable land, my wife wants to farm and have livestock - just like her mom who will come later to help.I don't personally view real estate as a financial investment. Fuck that part of the 'portfolio'. I want the homestead -- roots, not future resale value or convenience. That opens up the field and gives me many more options.

@Dawnz @barrsniffsatjejuneanalysis @EarlThePearls My nephew's kids can't speak Vietnamese any more and they all hate that they can't. Having Grandma with mine - who can't speak a lick of English and never will, should help, along with frequent swaps. I don't want my kids to lose solid anchors to both countries. Having native speech in both languages is definitely in their future interest. I'm just hoping that I can manage that.

@StevenDouglas I use to live for the summers in Gulfport / Biloxi. Hanging out at the beach with friends, the fishing trips, skiing, camping out, etc., there was never a dull moment. I still get out in the summer and take my youngest son to the beach and fishing. But the humid weather makes it a bit more tiresome than it was back in the day. You’ll be ok since you’re already tolerating it well in Siagon. I wish you well w/your plans.
