       I don't see where idiomatic phrasing equates to simplified English, but OK. We did save ourselves a hell of a lot of printer ink through the years removing a bunch of extraneous u's though.

       @PodunkPotato @matty The thing is being "sent down" is "sent down from the dock to the cells", i.e. you've been convicted and sentenced and you're literally going downwards.Actually thinking on, "up" does make sense for the US jewdicial system.

       In the USA "sent up" is just shortened from "sent up the river"."Sent up the river" originally referred to someone being sent to Sing-Sing prison, which is llocated about 30 miles up the Hudson river from NYC. After a while, it was used to refer to anyone being sent to prison.
