it is interesting how the mainstream media assumes poor people have no agency.https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/04/opinions/trump-replace-obamacare-health-care-2024-election-davidson/index.html[If the cost of an inhaler or insulin did not fit their budget that month, they might end up in the emergency room with completely preventable complications. Those same cash-strapped patients would often find themselves saddled with a massive bill because of that visit to the ER. ]There is cheap insulin available, but it might have slow response times that requires meal planning.

@Viking distrust is the main motivator now. It is true though. I have skipped getting inhaler refills to cover other costs.

@Viking It is obvious that you have never kept yourself alive with R and NPH. The newer insulins are affordable and non-prescription in most of the world and help you do things like work much better than R and NPH yes they will keep you out of DKA but they suck during puberty and you have to meal plan with the new stuff too it's when a growth spurt goes sideways that the fast acting stuff comes in handy as well as the odd fire drill. You know the average age of diagnosis for Type 1 is 8 right?

@EarlThePearls Same here. My T1D son uses the Novolog in his omnipod pump. Thats been so much better than pen, but the puberty trainwreck was rough seas. Monitors sugar with Dexcom G6 that communicates levels to the omnipod also. I love that basically the pod is micro-dosing insulin so the DKA risk is very low now. @Viking @LydiaTerry2002

@LydiaTerry2002 It really sucks to get Type 1 diabetes, especially for kids. But if I have to choose between government paying $500 to $1000 per month, and the patients (their families) having to make stringent meal planning for $25 per month, I chose the latter. Also, things are improving, but the fearmongering think of the children stories will not give an honest account of best possible prices, because they don't like Walmart.

@EarlThePearls My son was diagnosed at 15, he's18 now. Honeymooned quite a bit, past 2 years were large fluctuations due to high/low natural hormone levels. He faced it amazingly, but one of the hardest days isnwhen he came up to me and said, "Dad, did you know on average diabetics live to 65?" I really hate WebMD...I told him, that's an average, and you need to focus on getting done whatnyou want to get done sooner than others. @Viking @LydiaTerry2002

I hope he can take that as a motivation to manage the disease as well as possible, rather than feeling defeated.

@LydiaTerry2002 When we had one of our first classes there was an 8yo kid in there, and they were all new, so taking shots of insulin, their new forever reality. It was really hard, and still is to think about for all those affected by this disease. Once again though, check this out, another amazing connection of people here on the Fedi. Thanks for listening. Keep up and the good fight. @EarlThePearls @Viking

@Viking Yes yes it does and yes they don't tell you about things like Reli On but you keep talking about meal planning You have to plan no matter what and the government does not have to pay for the stuff they have to get the market manipulations out of the way. And the average is 8 but it can happen sooner. Got any ideas on how to know what a 3 year old is going to eat in an hour? Or how to know how much activity they are going to get during the 6 hours the R lasts?

@Viking Went about 1.5 years then gotnhitbwith crippling anxiety when he thought he had some stage of Diabetic Kidney Disease. Another gift from reading WebMD. That was really rough, we did some counseling and I think he's managed a lot of it, but out of the blue he just will say, Im feeling anxious about, you know, whatever. He does really good though. Never experienced that before, very scary and all in his mind. @EarlThePearls @LydiaTerry2002
