I recently had a conversation with the father of somebody in charge of plane procurement for UPS's commercial fleet and he told me a story about how they spent hours with Boeing's mechanics trying to fix dysfunctional wipers on a `!brand new plane`!. It was a spring installed backwards (or something tiny like that) on `*all`* of the plane's wipers.🧵️2/4

He said the UPS mechanics could've fixed it in a few minutes and that Boing's people had basically no clue how to troubleshoot anything and only really knew how to follow diagrams. It was like Dell's customer service in a way, they just weren't trained for it.🧵️3/4

Boing's planes were once manufactured to the highest quality standards, truly befitting of the phrase "aerospace grade", but with pressure to make things cheaper for profit, things just got worse and worse. There's a word for that, it's called enshittification, and this is a textbook example.🧵️4/4

@Linux_in_a_Bit they bought McDonnell but it was Boeing management who was scraped. Mcd way of doing things sacrificed engineering standards.A real shame.

@Linux_in_a_Bit I think the issue is knowing people in the aerospace industry - and then having cause to talk about it. I only really caught anything about Boeing‘s culture after months of regular exchange and it was mentioned one time…

@Linux_in_a_Bit if Boengs are getting enshitified, like teslas, I don't want to know if Airbus is any worse (the A320 etc). I learnt most of this stuff from Flight Sim X videos on Youtube.

@Linux_in_a_Bit I think this is probably happening everywhere. We had a massive wave of retirements everywhere in the last few years and "leaders" never developed a succession plan to accommodate for this. Nobody knows what the fuck they're doing anymore. Add to that the fact that most people are at least marginally brain-damaged from SARS at this point, and you have a multi-faceted recipe for an existential crisis at the societal level. Good luck everyone! We've been abandoned.

It happened by a completely different process.Mcdonnell Douglas was another failing aerospace company with shit company culture and known for making shit airplanes. They were bought by boeing and despite MD being a train wreck it's management were self-assured that their way of doing business was better. So assured in fact, that the culture of failing bought-out company spread and eventually infected all of boeing management.
