I’ve owned a lot of smart watches.Pebble OG, Pebble Steel, Garmin vivoactive 4, Apple Series 7.This is the Garmin Instinct-2X Solar.30 day battery life, infinite charge if you’re outdoors. Has GPS, notifications, music control, etc. Only thing it doesn’t have is mapping (because it doesn’t have a color display), but I’m happy to trade that for battery life.As someone who typically carries 4 flashlights (phone, AAA 300 lumen, 1k lumen, and pistol), I’ve used the watch flashlight a lot.

While the watch face is customizable, I really like the default one because it shows UTC time :)

@eriner you humans are so impressed with your microwave ovens and digital watches -- Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyOr was that Time Bandits? Going to go with hitchhikers and Time Bandits tried to make a reference to it as a tech David Warner's evil character had to master.

@eriner looks big, but practical. I’m going to guess you’ve got some big wrists, but I doubt I could wear it. I ditched my Apple Watch a short while back and went Casio G-Shock, the classic square but in stainless steel. Right on the edge of what I can wear size wise, but yes the solar and never worrying about charge is critical. Syncs to atomic clock, never wrong time is nice too.

@maxburn nah I’ve got skinny little girl wrists. Like, it’s comical how skinny my wrists are. I can touch my thumb and index finger when grasping with my other hand. This isn’t a dress watch for me. I have a few ~$35 eBay automatic skeleton watches I wear for dress.I wear this watch 100% for function over form. And to my knowledge, it is best in class. Smartwatch + infinite battery (or at least 30d) is what I’ve always wanted in a smartwatch. My first watch was an e-paper Pebble, after all.

@eriner I have the instinct, top choice.Don't forget if you put it in low power operation it has a ~45 day batter life, without charging

@eriner I'm probably going to be selling my Fenix 6X pretty soon. As much as I want to like Garmin watches they just come up short when compared to my Apple Watch. If they'd add cellular functions and an easy way to stream audio I'd switch back in a minute. I'm not too concerned about long battery life, obviously. Nor big brother tracking devices....But the real deal breaker is the display just never looks right under indoor light.

@Alphakilopapa @eriner I don’t so much care what it looks like but I don’t like sleeves hanging up on it in the winter and don’t like it flopping around the side of my arm. So far the best I have that doesn’t do that is a classic square gshock with an elastic band.

@eriner My AW is more of a phone replacement than watch these days. I will often leave the phone at home and just use the watch.

@maxburn @Alphakilopapa yeah obviously it's all about what you're looking for in a digital watch.I really like the pseudo-infinite battery, GPS waypoints, and just basic smartwatch stuff (phone notifications, music control).I totally get going more basic, or even analog w/ an automatic watch, if that's all someone needs. That all said, I can also use this watch with NVG 😈

@ReadyKilowatt once there's a Signal app for the Apple watch (with offline dictation), I could be convinced to join you.But I also like having a camera on me at all times, so maybe not. :P

@eriner @Alphakilopapa battery anxiety was the top reason with a bullet why I ditched Apple Watch, don’t charge it same time every day and it doesn’t make it through all the next day away from stupid proprietary charger. Solar is huge. I do miss music controls. Casio has Bluetooth for feature settings but no music control.

@eriner Yea, there have been times when I wished I had a camera with me, but then again, I'd be taking pictures instead of just observing. At first I missed having that slab in my pocket, almost like I forgot pants or something. And I had to force myself to leave the phone at home too. Really is an extension of ourselves.

@ReadyKilowatt You're not wrong about that. But I'd feel the same way if I left my Leatherman, flashlight, (and now, after licking boot,) pistol, knife, or anything else I EDC.Actually, let me do a quick pocket dump and post an EDC picture :)

@eriner I'm not at all a luddite WRT tech, in fact quite the opposite. But recognizing that the stuff is designed to be addictive really puts things in perspective too.

@TheBigLoder @eriner @Alphakilopapa oh one pro tip, on all of these watches with black rubbery material & bands avoid bug spray with DEET. It will discolor that material and it won’t wash off.

@maxburn @TheBigLoder @Alphakilopapa heh, I actually avoid DEET and bug spray in general when I can. That shit has to be poison and be giving us cancer. It works too well. It ain't right.
