Any members in the US use an antenna or device for Free TV? Looking for recommendations. Using Spectrum (Spectrum TV) plan which is basically free TV channels but they are uping the price constantly. Their TV Cisco box from 2013 now costs me $12 a month. I could have bought Cisco for the amount in monthly fees for their boxes.

@wtdrisco We use an antenna like the one in the link. We live in the Fort Lauderdale area, and we get 3 of the 4 national channels (abc, nbc, etc.). We also get several other channels with old tv shows, home shopping, and local access tv-style shows. We occasionally get interference when a car drives by. My parents live in rural Iowa, and they get fewer channels because they are so far from the city. Amplified HDTV Antenna https://a.co/d/2GVYtpg

@wtdrisco We mainly watch streaming services, including hulu and Amazon prime video. Pluto is a free streaming app that has a wide array of content, so we watch it quite a bit too. But, it is nice to have the antenna to catch the local news from time to time and as a back up if the internet goes out.

@autumnfrigger that is cool. Spectrum owns cities and they raise prices with no oversight by the city that granted them exclusive rights. Not sure how good basic AT&T is. Getting too expensive here

@wtdrisco It's worth giving the antenna a try. You can try it for a few days and return it if you decide it isn't for you. We were prisoners to Comcast/Xfinity in our area. I don't miss paying them through the nose every month!

@wtdrisco Make sure that you have transmitters in range with a website like https://otadtv.com/tvtower/index.html.Antenna are directional and you have to point them properly to get best reception. If you are too far from transmitter, you may need a power boosted antenna. The old, vaned antennas are supposed to work well. If you still have one, try it first.

@NoBeret @wtdrisco well outside of Chinese bullshit figures, they take the field strength available at a given distance from an average wattage transmitter and compare that to the matching field strength sensitivity of the antenna plus the amplifier gain and say that's how little of a signal needs to be present to be detected and amplified given a clear line-of-sight shot. Then it's how far from the tower in miles do you get that small signal.

@NoBeret @Klaatu OHHH - I like this. Do you have yours indoors? I have an old house. Plaster walls. Not sure if that would reduce the signal level...

@schwierking This is interesting. So I would have to angle a device to get these? If something like this? https://www.walmart.com/ip/961115972I do not have one of the old antennas on top of the house. Do these smaller devices work well? And do you have to move them around the house to pick any of the towers?

@wtdrisco Hi DEf Antennas if you are in the right market. In Orlando I get almost 60 channels, 1/2 of which are junk, but get all the major ones and independents.

@wtdrisco I have an inexpensive, outdoor antenna (can't find for sale now). It is mounted under the eaves and pointed in the general direction of a group of transmission towers. I did not need an amplifier. Also, it was difficult to get power for an amplifier up there.Note that masonry and foam insulation are hard to receive through. Wire lath under stucco will probably completely block these wavelengths. When it is windy, leaf-full pecan and oak trees block the signal on one channel.
