@icedquinn I want self-driving cars because it means self-driving bus and truck services and forcing more people out of jobs so hopefully by 2058 we'll finally go for universal basic income when unemployment hits 50% and no amount of flogging the poor helps to maintain order.Yes, I'll just be locked indoors playing video-games, what did you think?

@TURBORETARD9000 @icedquinn Trains are cool as fuck, but I've given up on the government (the government of Finland obviously, what else?) fixing the rail network. Trains suck at 90 degree turns so fixing them is harder than just using roads like trams and busses do.

@susie i actually want to do other stuff but that other stuff requires people and money and i don't have those things :comfystoner: like building some computer peripherals i'd like to do. but i don't really have resources to do it. there's one blob with some minimal interest in working with me on it.i usually get up and try to get human social and check messages and such before getting baked or playing games. but idk i'm not a representative sample of NEETs i guess since i just finished helping food prep for dinner

@cjwatson @skruffl Ever take the Eurostar? Train travel isn’t a target as much as air travel, but recent events show it’s not terrorists but just crazy people that are a problem on airplanes. When more people travel by train, that will become an issue for trains: bad behavior by them, alcohol issues etc

@bouriquet @cjwatson @skruffl the biggest difference with trains and planes is that in an emergency, a train can stop pretty quickly and emergency services can get there quickly too. Not so much with a plane.

@localzuk @bouriquet @cjwatson @skruffl Adding an intermediate stop to a high-speed rail line adds less than 10 minutes to the itinerary. Adding an intermediate stop to an air schedule adds a minimum of 90.

@skruffl But once large numbers of folks start using rail, won’t the stations become as crowded as airports, possibly with increased security? Degrowth of a population is really not possible. Only bad habits can be changed, but slowly.

@bouriquet @skruffl It's true that, in Paris, you meet with gendarmes carrying submachine guns in the rail terminals. I don't like that. But direct comparison, such as Charles de Gaulle Airport and the annexed TGV station, or Frankfurt Airport and the annexed Fernbahhof, shows me that this concern is misplaced.

@skruffl please.. stop pretending you are talking about technology when you are talking about politics, It would be less boring if you were honest and just said that you want to force socialized transport on everyone. In terms of pure numbers, politics aside, self driving vehicles will be the cheapest, cleanest, most flexible and with more throughput form of transport ever, it's just an algorithms theory question but I'm sure you aren't interested in researching or understanding the numbers

@lithiumflower_ @skruffl I think your "pure numbers" have no reality to them. Traffic jams are inevitable with individual vehicles, the behaviour of which can be approximated by the mathematics of hydraulic flow. Besides that, resource costs and land impacts of individual vehicles are serious.Other than that, I find "socialized transport" has a great deal in its favour.http://www.railwayage.com/index.php/blogs/william-vantuono/is-there-a-plot-against-passenger-trains.html

@skruffl I won't go into details but it's easy to understand this by visualizing self driving vehicle fleets as "fluid" trains. you won't just have self driving cars, you'll have many forms of self driving, in fact many vehicle forms that aren't currently very popular will become so, like intermediate size transports, for 6-10 persons etc. Right now they aren't popular because you have to either go for throughput with big transports (trains, buses) or for flexibility with small ones

@publius @lithiumflower_ @skruffl Can you prove the inevitableness for any number of individual vehicles? Do trains that cannot enter a train station because of other trains in th station as traffic jam while heing viewed as public transport? It's so silly to link things by ideology but pretend it to be mathematically based without even checking for confounding variables. But I get your point. Dreaming is allowed.

@herrmannpierre @lithiumflower_ @skruffl To say that individual vehicles are a better solution is rather like saying that, instead of having water and sewer pipes to your house, you'd rather have a truck come periodically to deliver water, and one to take away sewage. This is not an unreasonable solution ― in certain situations. But in cities, that is, dense environments (which are favoured by other considerations), "mains and drains" work better. So do trains.

@publius @lithiumflower_ @skruffl Well, you have a point. For cities, densly populated areas. The world is a bit more variant than that. And maybe on sgould take into account on how long a solution needs to be put in place.

@publius @lithiumflower_ @skruffl at last, who are you talking about saying cars are the better solution? The starting point was about saying what someone wants to see as a solution (and what not).Saying that both public transport by trains and busses and autonomous electric cars (that may look different and definitely will be used entirely different from todays household owned single or family car) a part of a common solution is very different. In cities as well as anywhere else.

@herrmannpierre @lithiumflower_ @skruffl Cities are, to a very great extent, not only where the people are, but also where the cars are. You can't just say "conditions are different all over" where there is one particular set of problems which urgently need solving, and for which we have workable solutions which can be implemented now. Also, you literally said that individual vehicles would always be the superior solution because of some mathematical mumbo-jumbo.

@publius @lithiumflower_ @skruffl Worldwide more than fifty percent of people live in cities. In Germany it is a bit less than 50%.Livable cities should be built in a manner that has you covered for most needs without owning a car, sure. That's not the case though. We can go both ways: change cities towards the best case scenario and whilst that make cars, bikes and public transport work together while getting greener. It is not efficient to let someone drive an empty bus, is it?

@publius @localzuk @cjwatson @skruffl Poor comparison. Rail is capable of intermediary stops but air travel can go point to any other point.Totally different concepts.
