It's finally live! My article "Any Sufficiently Transparent Magic…," adapted and refined from elements of my dissertation, is now available to read on ProQuest. This is from the roundtable "On Religion and Algorithms," in the Fall 2023 issue of the journal American Religion, looking at the intersection of Religious Studies, "AI," and other areas of technological and technosocial inquiry. You can get access at this link, but keep an eye out elsewhere, as well:https://www.proquest.com/docview/2906219741/1F3A369A6C37414APQ/7

@adamhill if you have any institutional credentials anywhere, proquest should let you get access; not always but many times. Otherwise, there should be a pre-print available soon

@adamhill a friend just alerted me that if you log in to your local public library's main page, you may be able to get access that way, too

My article "Any Sufficiently Transparent Magic…," adapted from components of my dissertation, is part of the special roundtable "On Religion and Algorithms," from the Fall 2023 issue of the journal American Religion, now available at it's Project Muse home page: https://muse.jhu.edu/pub/3/article/916425This roundtable looks at the intersection of Religious Studies, "AI," and other areas of technological and technosocial inquiry, and my chapter in particular explores the both some of religious and magical concept structures at play in "AI" discourse, and the work done by obfuscatory and hype-laden language around "AI."I hope you enjoy it.

@Wolven Initial skim-read, this is great and something I've been musing about myself with the last year. Looking at America from the outside and particularly SV there's definitely a religiosity/spiritual angle some of these people are taking around this stuff. It's something I've mentioned in passing in some internal talks although not something you can truly dive into with business people so it's a careful line to tread but it needs to be out there

@Wolven See, this is why you're trouble. My campus library does have American Religion access, so that means not only your piece, but a whole dang special issue on religion & AI?

@Wolven Ooh I might teach this! My first-year writing class does a unit on how to read academic articles, and yours would be a great example for them in terms of interest and style. Lovely!

@Wolven This kind of analysis is not only fun to read, but is increasingly (and bizarrely) relevant as we learn just how many of the people at the heart of the AI industry appear to be in a straight up cult (referring to the TESCREAL crowd).

If you've wondered what I've been on about when i talk about how magical and religious belief are inherently bound up in "AI" and technology as a whole, this is a relatively accessible exploration of that argument

@Frances_Larina There are specific protocols for uploading preprints to personal pages, and then and post-prints after a certain window of time. Which is to say, yeah, but it'll take at least a couple of weeks

@tanepiper @Wolven I haven't been able to find any meaningful difference between "The Singularity" and "The Rapture", either in content, or in the way they're employed.

@lienrag @Wolven Read "The Cosmic Computer" a/k/a "Junkyard Planet" by H Beam Piper. Most of the computer-cult stuff happens in the background, but it certainly adds quite the flavor to the main story!

@publius @Wolven I found this book over Christmas - it's two things - show Humanism (as it's initial modern founding) was still deeply tied to spirituality, also humanity (or at least a subset they define as normal) should be elevated and future humans should benefit. It all sounds too familiar too.https://tane.codes/@tanepiper/111671170541368937For me AI is just another thing in the cycle of irrational humans with too much power making decisions for the rest

@Wolven @adamhill I can confirm that even from home I regularly use my local public library access to access ProQuest available articles (and many others. It's usually under the "research" or "databases" category and your librarian can help you via email if you can't go in).
