Have you considered learning to code so you can have you job outsourced? Might be fewer steps involved, but I never learned a trade.

Not true in my experience. They'll pay for a good heart surgeon alright, but quality traditional paving and the like? Never. Miguel gets the job every time.

@rher @deprecated_ii @nugger @veff *The* exception to this is unions, and it’s very situational, but generally, it’s another example of zoomllenial/Xoomer dichotomy, where the older guys, by virtue of being older and more experienced, get access to better opportunities, but those opportunities are drying up and significantly browning for the zoomllenials going into those professions. So I can show you a carpenter making $53/hr with benefits at 50, but that same company will be significantly browner, and those benefits will have inflated away by the time you’re 50.

@deprecated_ii 1. Anyone with "skeptic" in their name gets the bullet.2. It seems like every meme trade skill just gets immediately saturated with hopefuls and drops to minimum wage. It will probably happen to forklift certification within a year.

@deprecated_ii A lot of places will pay for you to get certs in shit. I have a bunch of certs in different shit and never paid a dime and got paid while being in school. You just have to look around and you can do it all while being paid. From temp work when I was younger am like those north korean generals with 500 medals. Just have a real random assortment of them like welder, cdl, butcher and a few others.

@deprecated_ii Those are the jobs you have to take and are more likely to pay to train you. sign a one to two year contract for below average pay and they send you off to get a cert. They spend the 8k for your classes and get to save a lot on your wages that way so they come out ahead and once your time on the contract is about up you scout out better paying jobs that want people with your cert.

@deprecated_ii If you got to a jobsite like indeed and search "apprentice training" lots of job offers like I described popped up just doing generic state wide searches. Job fairs and temp services will also have a lot of offers like that if you look in the right places.

@TalmudTranslator @deprecated_ii The only training I've ever had on the job was for stuff related to specific equipment we were acquiring and even that was very sparse and basic. Only comprehensive training I ever received was in the military. The problem these days is with credentialism so rampant most people have to spend a significant amount of their own money and time just to get a basic cert to MAYBE get a foot in the door. Then they have to compete with scabs from the third world who get preferential treatment and aren't held to the same standards.
