Today I learned there is a fork of Misskey called, Sharkey. To quote the development:"Sharkey is an upstream fork of Misskey that promises to deliver an improved feature set and UX across the board, with an emphasis on providing improved performance over other Misskey derivatives, our mission is to cohesive experience taking note of our communities feedback to better our software."https://joinsharkey.org#Sharkey #Misskey #Fediverse #ActivityPub #Mastodon

@Linux_Is_Best Yep.Out of the ashes of firefish, we've gotten an interesting little ecosystem of new misskey forks:- iceshrimp- catodon- sharkeyThey're all different but also seem to all be friends (having all come out of firefish) and willing to share code and ideas.Silver lining of the "fall" of firefish/calckey is that a healthy ecosystem of western misskey-like platforms has probably developed.

@maegul@hachyderm.io #Sharkey did not come from #Firefish. It forked from the latest v13 branch of #Misskey and is actively following upstream's development. FF meanwhile initially as #Calckey forked from an older version of MK and eventually made it a hard fork at the time of the rebrand IIRC. So Sharkey can't directly use code from Firefish-based forks like #Iceshrimp and #Catodon, as they're on vastly different codebases.@Linux_Is_Best@mstdn.social

Sharkey has the same problem as MissKey at the moment.Registration appears to be impossible.#SharKey #MissKey #Fediverse #Mastodon #ActivityPub

@maegul@hachyderm.io While #Sharkey did use ideas from #Firefish, it did not fork from #Firefish (they had to implement the improvements taken from FF by scratch actually because FF's code is just not compatible). It forked from the latest v13 branch of #Misskey and is actively following upstream's development. FF meanwhile initially as #Calckey forked from an older version of MK and eventually made it a hard fork at the time of the rebrand IIRC. @mima @Linux_Is_Best Thanks! I was aware of the lineage differences (which I hope doesn’t become regrettable down the line). But as I understand some of the people in the Sharkey dev group came from or were involved to some extent with firefish, so there’s a little cross-pollination at least. How meaningful that is I don’t know.

@mima @Linux_Is_Best Otherwise, yes, I did misrepresent how close Sharkey is to firefish.I also underemphasised how much each of these projects aren’t especially interested in simply carrying on the firefish project but rather have their own ideas and directions that wouldn’t have been possible under the firefish banner, which seems to be a wholly healthy thing TBH (firefish seemed to be a bit hype hungry and not quality conscious).
