I think a huge part of the outrage was that it was a religious and moral 'authority' involved with this and secondly because priests were protected and some were moved around to other parishes where a subset of them repeated their crimes.The difference in numbers is indeed staggering. Though I'd like to see it as percentage of their respective groups. From just a very quick and lazy search, there are about 100 times more teachers than Catholic priests in the US, which makes the numbers a bit more comparable.

The teachers are protected in a lot of circumstances too. The unions defend the degeneracy and there's a cultural phenomenon (that's thankfully starting to shift) that young boys are told they're lucky to be fucking a teacher. Honestly just burn it all the fuck down and put the pedos behind bars now and I'll be happy.

Pedophiles are opportunists. They will always seek "a protected position of trust in which they can abuse that trust". Being a priest in the RCC no longer provides that. So they move on.
