@Mikerotch75 @Dan_Ramos See two lanes going the same direction so it’s still not as bad as the Keweenaw.

@Dan_Ramos Half a tank of gas vs 50% charge: who would last longer?(The battery. Almost certainly the battery, I think. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

@ddr In cold weather? ...While the same car battery is both trying to keep the battery and cabin warm? I'll absolutely bet that half a tank of gas in my 2017 Kia Niro would outlast ANY pure electric car even if you gracious gave that EV the blessing of being 50% of its theoretical full charge, which they rarely do--especially as they age. I've had trips where I've sat in my car to sleep for a few HOURS in the cold with the heater on and a quarter of a tank and I still have plenty of gas.

@Dan_Ramos @ddr I've found repeating the mantra "They hate you, and want you to die" sort of makes things make sense...in an otherwise unfathomable world. As bitter a pill as that is, consider that kind of sentiment should be/would impossible in a society which respects its citizens...yet here we are.

@Dan_Ramos Yeah, I'm mostly going off of the low impact running the AC in a Tesla's camping mode. (<10%/night, I think?) But that's a very premium car!And one of the big things you can do with a gas car is -bring it more gas-. You flat out can't do it with electrons right now.

@ddr I have seen some people bring portable generators to a Tesla to help charge it but it takes a LOT of gasoline/diesel and a long time of running to get even just a few extra miles enough to hopefully get to a charging station (and hope one's available and that it is in working order). If you're stuck in THAT kind of traffic, you'll never even get the emergency truck to come around to get the charger to you. Go ask the CEO of Ford about his recent F-150 Lightning road trip.

I'm too tired/drunk to look it up right now, but I made this argument with a libertarian/lives-in-the-middle-of-nowhere-tn friend and we looked up some numbers and EVs really aren't that bad when it comes to their electric heaters. Heaters take a lot of energy, but those batteries have a lot of capacity. My friend has an F350 and a Tesla, so he knows the limitations of each and uses them appropriately. Still, the issue with the EV isn't the battery capacity to power a heater, but the fact that the capacity drops in really cold weather ...EVs are terrible long haul vehicles and terrible cold weather vehicles, and the batteries eat through expensive rare earth metals ... but in the snow storm scenario where they're not moving, they'd be fine till morning. But all the other limitations on charging infrastructure still apply.

@ddr Don't get me wrong--I looooove the way they drive and everything but the battery technology is absolutely NOT practical for a car yet. I suspect that the answer to all of this will come with either a very innovative supercapacitor technology we haven't yet discovered or else it'll be another chemical-to-electricity technology like hydrogen cells (which have their own issues too). Here's hoping the tech advances past this stupid phase that they're insisting we embrace.
