Could this be also youtube being stupid with them not updating their copyright database?Probably both if I were to guess.

@Dan_Ramos there should be some legal consequences here for both Disney and YouTube, but of course I know nothing will ever happen.

@brad It also kind of depends. This is a weird gray area of legality, though, given the COPYRIGHT is now public domain (so the video itself is free) but the trademarks are all still intact. That being said, trademarks aren't copyright and YouTube has no fucking right to dip into THAT pool. Leave that shit up to the courts (and good luck to Disney where people aren't using him as a logo or something).

@brad @Dan_Ramos Ah ha; while I'm not sure exactly what's going on with YouTube and Steamboat Willie (they go beyond the DMCA because of RIAA/MPAA as I recall lawsuit(s)), it would seem to be in the general domain of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyfraud which I stumbled up on while finding the below links:I've only seen legal consequences for false assertions of copyright for a couple of law firms that didn't actually have real rights to what they were suing about, one of which also engaged in gross criminality.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas_Review-Journal#Copyright_infringement_litigation and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RighthavenThe criminal law firm, as in they were criminals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prenda_LawWe might also note because more of us have heard of it SCO v. The World which ultimately failed because it was also based on knowing fraud, this instance of "SCO" only bought the rights to mechanically license UNIX™ and take 5% of the revenue for their vig. But while the lawsuits failed, I don't recall anyone getting punished, and seeing a how Microsoft was bankrolling them some set of people got ungainfully employed for a period of time.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @brad Oh, I remember SCO vs the world, alright!http://www.groklaw.net/That's some good reminders and digging. Thanks for that! I'll bet there'll be lawsuits over these copyright abuses. I'm almost absolutely certain there will be trademark lawsuits (since you can lose a trademark if you don't bother to defend it in public). Thanks again!
