People are slowing learning that #OpenStreetMap contributors is very skewed. There's a long tail, but so so so much of the data is being added by the craft mappers.

@amapanda This post interests me but I don't understand many of the words and implications. What are craft mappers? Is a long tail bad or good? What does the skew imply?

@vees @amapanda Craft mappers are usually OSM contributors that are not relying on industrial way of contributing (example using automated data import). Sometimes it is also associated with OSM contributors that are focusing on a specific task (could be a specific area or area of expertise).

@piggo a small amount of people contribute a very large percentage of the data

@BalooUriza @amapanda So let me see if I understand:Bulk data ops: Largely good, probably governments making ArcGis files public, etc.Craft mappers: Largely good if they stick around and correct small detailsLong tail: Bad because the X-axis of the tail is full of spam.Still don't understand the skew issue.

@vees @amapanda In my view this is expected as it's how contributions to 'citizen' science projects have been for hundreds of years: http://sk53-osm.blogspot.com/2016/02/distribution-of-contributions-in.html.'Citizen' in quotes because it's noticeable that many 'amateur' contributors of biological records are experts in another scientific field. A random page from Gigi Crompton's Cambridge Floral Records shows this well https://www.cambridgeshireflora.com/species3/s/sal_pur.html
