Seriously, if Apple copy Microsoft with a stunt like this, that'd be my cue to buy a Framework laptop and switch 100% to Linux for work. (Which would be enormously painful as Scrivener isn't supported on Linux and it's been my work platform for the past 15 years.)NB: only distributions with X.org ranther than Wayland and sysv init instead of systemd need apply.

@cstross This scrivener issue is one of the two things keeping me from switching permanently to linux on framework also, dratI also use Scrivener for all my books and longform journalism (and secondarily I need logic pro for music editing, which is Mac only, and there’s nothing remotely as capable and featured in linux alas)

@cstross Same here with Scrivener. I'm about to try out a solution with zettlr.

@arclight @outie @cstrossScrivener on Wine appears to depend on fully working Vulkan, so some older graphics hardware is problematic. You can still get Scrivener 1.9 for Linux but I cannot recommend it.

@arclight @outie @Wolf_Baginski @cstross I tried Wine — it worked well, but as I recall made it impossible to synchronize a Scrivener file to other machines via dropbox or other cloud-storage services I currently hop between a Mac laptop and a windows desktop, opening my Scrivener file on either one Last time I tried to do that with wine on Ubuntu it wouldn’t sync …. Maybe there’s a way to make it work I hadn’t hit a pond?

@clive @arclight @outie @Wolf_Baginski Scriv under WINE might not sync direct to Dropbox, but have you looked into rclone? A cron job to run rclone regularly between the directory you store your Scriv projects in and your Dropbox account would probably work. Or write a shell script wrapper for Scriv that manually runs rclone to sync changes when you quit?

@bencurthoys @clive +1 for syncthing. I'd put on a list of free sw that's better than any commercial alternative.

@cstross haha yeah, systemd continues to be in that “it’s a nice idea, but it’d be nice if it were good” bucketAdmittedly I do tend to use it on a lot of things but pretty much _always_ with some swearing added in (because there’s always _some_ new flavour of bullshit localised)

@froztbyte Is there a man page for systemd? With all the startup options? And another man page for the configuration file format and contents? Or am I expected to waste bandwidth and brain cells watching fucking YouTube videos with embedded ads to learn how to use it, like most shit software these days?

@cstross @froztbyte There are manpages that go over all the options, yes.I still think that format sucks in comparison to info manuals though.

@lispi314 @froztbyte The GNU push towards info format in the 80s DESTROYED the cohesion of the Linux documentation corpus by by introducing an incompatible, randomly variable, and inconsistent style—and worse, by convincing GNU contributors that "man pages are obsolete". Wankers.

@cstross @lispi314 @froztbyte So before Linux even existed, we destroyed it .. interesting concept. What next, we get blamed for climate change? And if you think "pull package source, debug from there" is easier than hitting SPACE .. I suppose the earth is flat as well.

@kirtai @cstross @graphite The strong coupling between parts that should instead have defined interfaces is indeed a concern and annoyance.I don't see what's so problematic in the kernel+systemd+wayland specifically in that before it was stil kernel+$thing+xorg. And basically always Xorg. Still a monoculture with its idiosyncracies. The problem with systemd is that its interfaces and scope are ill-defined and it keeps sprawling, while what should happen instead is that a specific scope is considered, junction points are pre-determined, and then when it's done? It's done. Implement something else for interacting with those junction points if you need to.
