Since I'm still seeing some confusion about it, here's the best writeup I've seen about what you can and can't do now with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, by Jennifer Jenkins, a professor of law at Duke University: https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/mickey/(In particular: There's no problem with using the name "Mickey Mouse" in your own original creation, as long as it's clear that your creation is not a product of Disney. "Trademark rights cannot be used to block the freedoms that the expiration of copyright allows.")
