Some 'science' photo libraries are...questionable. This photo claims to be "Ant carrying aphid egg, SEM" colorized to highlight the "egg" but look closely! (https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/370844/view/ant-carrying-aphid-egg-sem)It's NOT an egg. That's just part of the ant's mouth! Take a look at the second set of photos by Hugo Darras. ( https://flickr.com/photos/fourmis/5004761756 ) you can see this is part of her maxillae, the part she uses to collect liquid. How did they decide it was an aphid egg? Most aphids don't even lay eggs they give live birth!

I'm exasperated! What if I colored your nose pink in a photo and called it a strawberry? How would you like that?Or called it IDK... a "mouse egg" the whole thing makes no sense!

@futurebird Yeah, it's really bad form, but I'm still caught on aphids giving live birth. 😆 Did not know that! Also, I think you've invented another filter: Strawberry Shortcake.

@ColesStreetPothole They basically constantly leak little clones of themself out of their rear... it's horrifying and astonishing. The babies are often born already pregnant themselves. Forget rabbits. Aphids are on the top when it comes to reproducing like crazy.

@futurebird @ColesStreetPothole Here an unidentified aphid is nearly through live birthing a child. Another is out of focus in the foreground

I worry about the things I see online that I don't have the specialized knowledge to catch. I will try to email them about this issue but I have NOT had good responses when I send in corrections like this. General knowledge about insects, is very poor and how can people learn when this is one of the top images they will find.No wonder so many people say they can't understand how insect mouths work.
