@oshy play 6, any version. Great entry point. Keep in mind ps1 has issues with load times for the SNES ports.7 is also very accessible because of how many versions there are. But 6 is a good bridge to get you used to new and old final fantasy games and I recommend that first.

@All_bonesJones I read a lot about FF6 and it looks like theres no actually good version of itThe SNES version is the best gameplay and graphics wise but it has a very poorly done translation & censorship, the PS1 has full motion video but doesn't fix the translationThe GBA version fixes the poor translation but ruins the audio. Normally the audio being off isn't a big deal but this is a Final Fantasy game like half the appeal of the game is the musicThen there are the mobile and PC ports and they all have varying issues as well as totally ruin the graphics but they have a fixed script without the translation errors

@oshy if you're willing to use fan content there's decensorship and retranslation patches for ff6 snes, which turns it into the best version. if you play that and choose to play the like 3 or 4 fmvs on the ps1 version when they happen you get the best of every world

@RehnSturm256 @oshy how on EARTH is that fucking mess your favorite? you can take 10 steps in the wrong direction from the starting town and game over from running into endgame enemies. the game balance is so fucked you can literally softlock yourself if you build for vitality instead of evasion. on the gba version, you can softlock yourself with a poorly timed save. the game's just a fucking mess

@oshy Play Bravely Default for a modern-ish "Classic Final Fantasy-like" by the same company. Play the PSP versions of IV or VI if you want actual classic Final Fantasy that is as "not dates" as possible. For a non-classic Final Fantasy, play anything after VI.

@RehnSturm256 @oshy like i can appreciate the design theory behind soft gates and meat walls to keep the player on rails, but that has to be done with clear telegraphing and give the player a chance to realize they're fucking up and need to run. "i accidentally walked past the starting town when trying to return to it as part of the plot and died from a random encounter before i could run" is not that.

@bitterblossom @oshy XIII has shit writing and the gameplay is lacking, although trying to stretch 3x DPS as far as you can before changing paradigm to a healer is okay. The graphics are good for PS3 era, and the music is fine as well. The writing is just really bad. They try to do a "show don't tell", but I really felt like some explanation about how the world and, well, everything is supposed to be structured before getting thrown into it.Funnily enough, the main characters are all kinda like Chosen Undead from the Souls games, now that I think about it.

@RehnSturm256 @oshy i played the game regularly and got softlocked by a poorly timed save in one of those countless bullshit trap rooms that force an encounter in every tile that they stick IN EVERY FUCKING DUNGEON. i would have been able to get out of it IF THUNDER DIDN'T LEVEL UP because it leveled up and became too expensive me to cast! in a dungeon where enemies were only damaged by lightning! at that point i went back to ff1 (i was playing dawn of souls) and did a black mage solo run spells leveling up the more you use them and dungeons with vulnerability gimmicks are cool ideas! both of these ideas were executed by the syphilitic gibbons

@All_bonesJones @oshy see I don’t take these things as losses. It’s a game with infinite saves. Just…reload. I’m saving after every major boss fight anyway, then I use the knowledge of my mistakes or the game’s tricks and adapt. Games shouldn’t be just straight lines, because that’s how we get movie games of today, or FFX & XIII Final Hallways. I mention the comparison to Dark/Demon Souls in an edit for a reason, because it really is the same. Think about it like that.

@All_bonesJones @oshy @coolboymew yeah, FF3 on the 3DS is a weird one. I don’t recall perfectly, but you are always nerfed in a new class for awhile after changing. Makes “sense”, but another case where the logic it doesn’t translate to gameplay.Many times it resulted in: “Oh, you want to change classes for this new dungeon or boss fight? Well, you gotta leave to a lower leveled place now to grind your new class changes up”. Changing to a class you already excelled in still requires the grinding btw. It made it easier and more “enjoyable” to simply steamroll with favorite classes or risk heavy grinding.

@oshy the FMVs in the PS1 version of 6 are superfluous and incongruent with the game. FFVI is the pinnacle of the RPGs of the era and Square were at their peak in their abilities to dev a 2D RPG, especially on the SFC/SNES. If you want a primer for the series, play the PS1/GBA version of thr first FF. Otherwise play FFVI. If you don't like FFVI, don't bother with any others.And don't even bother with VII. Like FFVI, it's a product of its time; unlikr FFVI, it comes at the beginning of an era of practice and mastery of hardware rather than at the end.
