Does anyone else have an instinct where they subconsciously evaluate the expected longevity and stability of any link before sharing it anywhere?I instinctively trust GitHub repo links more than Google Docs for example

@simon Yes, and web.archive.org can take instant snapshots of links now, so if I'm worried, I link there instead.

@simon at work i constantly tell people that if you want to preserve knowledge it should end up in a repobecause google docs is where information goes to die.they’re decent for for realtime collab but ime impossible to find later & subject to weird rules around permissions

@phillmv I also also worry about things like what happens to the existing shared Google Docs links if an employee leaves a company and their account is shut down(I genuinely have no idea what DOES happen then)

@simon I only do this in retrospect once I realize the links are already rotten, which I guess shows which one of us worked in journalism

@simon i know from personal experience that the docs persistbut you’ve highlighted the problem: on top of search being a shit show & discoverability being close to null, google docs/drive’s permission model is very unintuitive & filled with footgunsyears ago, when i had a startup, i commissioned art from an illustrator & was flabbergasted when the folder disappeared from my drive; turns out the artist was freeing up space, which killed *my* copy

@simonThat particular distinction also is due to the form of the link. Github URLs generally have semantic content in the URL itself. Google ones have none.I have a great disdain for opaque URLs.

@simon if I see a particularly good Google Doc I instinctively duplicate it, but of course that will not receive updates. But maybe for linking in a blog post that's actually useful because you are referencing its current state anyway?Wish there was a way to create links with fallbacks, like you can have a set of images with different sizes in the same element 🤔

@simon I just habitually save a webarchive that I can edit into my posts later when the link goes bad

@phillmv @simon As I understand it, it can depend a bit on the policy of the org. In my work experience, I’ve both had situations where a person’s files were transferred to their manager or some third managing entity as well as ones where files were deleted and very difficult if not impossible to recover 🙃
