@simon finally I have a name to use for the idea of improving via consistency :) My struggles with managing my weight grew worse with COVID-enforced isolation and in the end the only thing that was able to put me back on the right track was grinding for the daily notification from Google Fit: "You achieved both your goals today". My daily step and activity goals have doubled over the span of six months and it has all been enabled by the desire to maintain that streak.

I'm adding "a Tom Scott Streak" to my list of inspirations, to accompany Into the Spider-Verse, Tom Holland’s “Umbrella” and Ray Bandar’s Basement Full of Skulls: https://simonwillison.net/2024/Jan/2/escalating-streaks/#tom-scott-streak

@simon I'm gonna miss his videos, but it's kinda stressful knowing a content creator is on such a long-term fixed schedule. It's like having kids you have to drive to school every day for 15 years... I mean, kinda...

@simon Within the self-help world, it's an idea popularized by the book Atomic Habits: one percent effort a day makes so much difference when done consistently in the long term.

I know it's a bit navel-gazy, but I'm considering writing something about my writing process, since I know lots of people have an intention to blogThis piece on Tom Scott and streaks took 2.5 hours to put together, and I'm really pleased with the end result

@simon please do, I’m sure lots of people would find it useful (I would)! Lovely post on Tom Scott. I saw him at a dconstruct years ago, he’s a great public speaker.

@simon “The best way to get really good at anything is to do that thing on a regular basis, thoughtfully, and with the goal of doing it slightly better every time.” — that’s an example of a process goal (as opposed to an outcome goal). I’ve seen a lot of process vs outcome goals in endurance training, here’s a bit of info on that https://www.trainerroad.com/blog/5-useful-process-goals-to-motivate-your-winter-cycling-training/ One of my last year’s process goal was “300 days of journaling”, I’m now on 432 days streak.

@simon Do it, for sure. I've been thinking about thinking about updating my blog post on tech book writing, online course recording, and other media creation. Go ahead and put in specifics even if they date your process; abstract platitudes are numerous and useless.

@simon having just hit a 10 year streak https://llvmweekly.org/issue/522 I definitely relate to the discussion about flexibility, as well as what a powerful motivational tool it can be to keep going. There's surely some sensible middle-ground between the extremes of the unbreakable streak and a haphazard publishing schedule, I'm not quite sure how it would be formulated though.

@22 I think streaks that run in phases are still hugely valuable - Tom's 10 year streak is notable because that hardly ever happens, but I've had 100 day streaks (my museums writing) that were totally worthwhile despite coming to an end

@simon I always enjoy that sort of “behind the scenes” process post, and would love to read one from you! Plus I’m guessing you might be using LLMs in the process these days and if so seeing how would fascinate me.

@jacob here's the transcript of my LLM usage for the Tom Scott piece - mainly as a thesaurus to try and find the right title, and note that the title I went with wasn't from that ChatGPT session at all! https://chat.openai.com/share/958b5aab-87fa-45e1-b816-2aece8d31f8c

@simon that's super similar to the way I've been using it. I've tried to get various LLMs to actually draft sections for me -- my writing process is to outline and then write, and I've been curious about a "turn this outline into prose" shortcut to getting to a rough draft, but I've not been able to get that to work. (Vs code, where "turn this comment into working code" works almost every time!)

@jacob in terms of assistance actually writing a post I get more value out of Copilot running in VS Code, which occasionally suggests a turn of phrase or end to a sentence that I use, and helps me with spelling since it often completes words that I don't know how to spell!
