       "Grey goo" used to refer to a speculated apocalypse in which nanotech goes literally viral and consumes all biomass on earth in order to feed its own replication - but I think the "grey goo" we're more likely to see at this point is the result of AI consuming all media and regurgitating worse versions in a recursive cycle, until it all becomes unrecognizable.

       This is what happens when you get a new generation of nerds who didn't grow up with magnetic tapes and photocopiers / fax machines, so they don't know that recursively making copies of copies eventually results in unusable garbage.
