It saddens me how much knowledge is locked away in Discord servers, and will absolutely vanish within 5yrsForums from 20yrs ago still show up as useful for me from time to time

@ellie That’s the main reason I recommend to not use closed spaces (like Discord) for open source communities: they are not openly searchable and thus keep away non-members from finding good comments, help, blog posts, thoughts or anything useful that would exist on indexable platforms if a Discord was not chosen in the first place (+ it’s an horrible and slow software).Thread-based apps (like forums, GitHub, Mastodon) are the way to go since 199x.

@ellie Maybe you can make a freedom of information request to the fed servers holding copies of it?

@ellie discord servers are absolutely part of the dark web.At least forums are indexable and some of the dead ones archived.

@carbontwelve @ellie alas, I've noticed on many motoring forums that admins didn't want to swallow the cost of hosting high res images (obviously useful if you are doing work on your vehicle) so many were sent to photobucket or other offsite places which enshittified their service, or simply closed it down so all the images from older forum posts are lost..That said, Team BHP from India is still really popular and full of good stuff (even for us in UK, as we drive on same side of the road)

@vfrmedia @ellie I collected as many examples of that as I could find while I was documenting third party image services contribution to the internets link rot.One forum I have frequented for the past 12 years occasionally has useful threads resurface only for 90% of the images to be deadlinks.
