@agturcz Note that this map is made from the point of view of a British tourist, or more generally someone speaking a Germanic or Romance language. If you speak a Slavic language, you can reverse that map.

@deshipu @agturcz I live in the dark blue part of the map, and this replicates my experience pretty accurately. :)

@agturcz @brie On the platform in Copenhagen, I had a revelation : PA (tannoy, if you're British) systems are always indistinct because they're made by Bang & Olufsen, and "mwah-mwaah mwha-mwa-mwaa-mwah-mwa" is a perfectly distinct and comprehensible sentence in Danish, a language which does not use consonants except for flavour.

@das_menschy @deshipu @agturcz In Finland, the street signs and such are mostly bilingual Finnish/Swedish, and I can usually puzzle out written Swedish after a while.

@agturcz With French people over a certain age, it’s more like “get out and don’t come back until you can speak proper French”

@publius @agturcz @brie It's "mwah-mwaah mwha-mwa-mwaa-mwah-mwaah". Or the Danes will pretend not to understand you.

@publiusFor Germans like myself Danish is in fact a miracle. While it's absolutely impossible to understand a word it is very easy to speak. All you need to do is keep on speaking German but holding your tongue with two fingers while doing so.The consonants disappear and the vowls turn into an indistinct murmur. Bingo: Fluent Danish@agturcz @brie
