       TIL that before the 13th amendment banned slavery, an earlier 13th amendment passed congress and was signed by Buchanan saying the government could not interfere with a state's right to have slavery.        @todayilearned The thirteenth amendment didn't even slavery *entirely*, it explicitly states "except as a punishment for crime" which at least partially explains the disproportionately large Black population in prison and the enormous and powerful for-profit prison industry. Slavery is alive and well in the US, it's just very poorly disguised as justice.
