A thing I realized last year was that while I have a nice job in a nice company I do sometimes feel a bit ... bored is the wrong term ... insufficiently challenged.Like a friend pointed me at an open job at Human Rights Watch (Director Technology and Human Rights) which was a very long shot and I didn't even get a response to my application which was kind of expected but I did realized how much it stung. Not as in hurt pride for not being interviewed or hired but hurt as in damn I would have really wanted to do that kind of work.Dunno what to do with that yet (I do have a family to support so I can't not have a job and dick around writing stuff and going to expensive conferences all the time to try and network) but it was an unexpected thing to learn this last year.

The problem is: There are not too many jobs, I don't have academic titles and other things that these jobs usually require and I wouldn't want to go into academia which does provide a lot of freedom to do what you want but comes with very unreliable employment.

It is something that contributes to me having a hard time to feel content though. Like I have so many ideas and things I'd love to write or work on but at the end of the day when things I have to do are done it's 10pm and it's hard to squeeze good work in when you know you have to get back up at 7.

@tante What you describe here is very honest and self-reflective. I'm sure many people are in similar situations.Of course rents and things have to be paid.I can't judge your underachievement, but as a child/family, being the reason that 1 doesn't flourish is also a kind of burden.Since it doesn't seem urgent, let it sink in. The new path is already in front of you anyway.

@tante Job under-challenged decades ago, I lucked into a nearby university’s adjunct professor slot. Standing up at evening classes challenged me to stay abreast of my subjects. I started bringing that knowledge back to my job and doing in-house training. Both taught me how to communicate better, got me exposure, which led to opportunities. Being a’prof’ was inspirational for my kids, taught me to have empathy for their teachers, and about the diversity of abilities of students.

@tante I understand you well. I’ve been in the same situation for the last five years. I even started my own business and that has been on and off my main occupation since, but I’m still soul-searching for my mission in life.My family and I are slowly playing with the thought of moving away from Germany. As much as I appreciate what DE has done for me over the years, there are other places where I could do my best without feeling the constant pressure to stick to the norms and the status quo.
