Anyone have any thoughts about "Why the Caged Bird Sings?" Was assigned to my son in English. I'm less concerned about the few sex scenes but more the implicit messages that may be conveyed and indoctrination attempted.

@JimDMac I haven't read it, so I consulted the book of knowledge (insert booming voice here). How does Maya Angelou warrant a 7-volume autobiography when The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire only needed 6? And that covers 1500 years!

@tj @JimDMac I had to read it in tenth grade english, though pretty sure I skimped by with the cliff notes because I thought it was boring. Probably didn't do very well in class about it either. lol 🤠

@JimDMac what grade is your son? In a nut shell: being a young black woman in the south before 1969. Racial Prejudice, rape and have a ‘voice’ to speak of the injustice.

@Boolysteed It's interesting how much of the curriculum is about racism.

@JimDMac I grew up in parts of the south . . . And the north can be more racist. In the end it’s a CLASS issue. I feel everyone should read unbridged Huckleberry Finn.

@JimDMac Consider home-school or a well-vetted private school? Or, read all the assignments yourself as well, and dialogue with your human resource on the merits of the works in question. And have them listening to The No Agenda Show so they know how to deconstruct.

@RadarRider Thanks. Home School not an option. Yes. Dialogue is so important. And often neglected. I’m going to do that. Worked with my other too kids that went through the system. Went through the Cliff’s notes and felt the darkness was too much. He actually had other options he could do which were better so I asked him to do one of those instead.

@Boolysteed Interesting. It’s not on our kid’s curriculum. It was on our list in High School.
