To our entire community of users: We agree completely - accessibility is an essential human right, no question! We deeply apologize... Accessibility has always been a first-order priority for us. It's important as well to not see such essential feature sets as binary - an either "have" or "don't have", and our intention today was to receive feedback on whether we're currently excelling in these areas or if you, our dear users, feel we can do even better.

Clearly we can do better on our messaging - the way our poll was worded gives the impression these "features" are afterthoughts. We're open to any and all feedback on the accessibility in Nextcloud - are we meeting expectations? If not, we would love to hear about your personal experience. We currently follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2, and the German BITV 2.0 guidelines in an effort to offer universal access to our software. You can read more here:https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/user_manual/en/universal_access.html

You can also browse open issues with the `accessibility` tag, and file issues as well to help us continue to improve in this area.https://github.com/nextcloud/server/labels/accessibilityAgain, a deep apology for starting our year off together a little uneasy, not our intention!

We're also currently in the review process of an accessibility certification, and will share the results when that comes to fruition.

@nextcloud The biggest issues Ihad last time I tried to use Nextcloud was that the Windows app was inaccessible. I wasn't attempting to use it on mobile at the time, so can't comment on those. I'd like to use it again if this has changed.

@nextcloud Thank you, #Nextcloud, for the apology and reevaluation of how your messaging was interpreted by the #disabled community. Thank you also for the willingness to improve public communication so that insensitive polls/posts like this are not published in future. Finally, thank you for defining the #accessibility standards which Nextcloud follows. #Blind #BlindMasto #BlindMastodon #BlindFedi #LowVision #VisuallyImpaired #Disability #DisabledMastodon #DisabledFedi #a11y @mastoblind @main

@nextcloud I'm not hharping or trying to beat a dead horse but I just took a look at your documentation about accessibility and it isn't actually even fully functional or meeting to accessibilty guidelines completely. You have at least one unlabeled button, an expandable something that is expanded by default and won't collapse as just a couple of things. I just went and had a look at your home page too and while I'm not actually an accessibility tester my partner is one and I'm pretty sure I've heard her comment on some of the practices that are on your web page. I'm not sure if this is intended or not but even choosing the english version of your page ends up with a fair bit of German on the page and that drop down wouldn't close for me after I opened it. Just some things to be aware of. I'd suggest you find someone to give your site a full check up especially considering the new release of WCAG 2.2. Good luck

@nextcloud Thank you for your reply and apologies. I need to clarify a few points. You say "Accessibility has always been a first-order priority for us." If accessibility has always been a first-order priority for you, why hasn't Nextcloud been built to be accessible by design from the beginning? So I can hear that accessibility is important to you, but that hasn't always been the case. The page you link to is insufficient to prove that you take accessibility into account. For example, there's nothing about compatibility with the screen readers used by, mostly, blind people to navigate. It's great to know that the survey was not intended to be a choice of what you would do in 2024.You ask us to create tickets for problems encountered. But there are far too many problems for it to be effective to create a ticket here and there. For example, there are so many buttons without labels in the web interface that I wouldn't know where to start. I tried to guide a blind person via screen sharing, and ended up having to take over and do it for her because it was so inaccessible. It would be a colossal free job to create these tickets when, on the other hand, you're a company. You ask us if you excel in the field of accessibility. The answer is clearly no, for the moment. If I understand correctly, you're in the process of having your tools audited, and that's great news! I hope it's a serious WCAG (or even ATAG https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/atag/) audit, which will identify all the non-compliant points. It will have to be accompanied by an action plan to correct all this, as there will be a lot to do. It's this audit that will provide you with the tickets you're asking us to write. The stakes of accessibility are huge. Today, we often have to turn to GAFAM tools, which are more accessible, but this is often not feasible in militant collectives, for example. If you make a serious commitment to NextCloud, it will be a huge step forward.I can't wait to see what happens next. Thank you.

@nextcloud For me it is impossible to read the question in the poll in your intended way. It reads like, users should choose wether nextcloud should prioritize for example faster speed over accessibility. I appreciate your intention and your apology. Thank you for that!I would still feel better if you would rephrase the poll and post it again (or delete it).1/2

@nextcloud It not only hurts, letting people vote on the importance of disabled people, but it isn't representative phrased like this, anyways: Many people will vote for disabled people instead of trying to give you the answer to your intended question: where the software mainly needs improvement. Right?2/2

@skalabyrinth Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We certainly understand how the phrasing of this poll is indeed problematic in several ways, and have decided to be transparent and not delete the poll, instead hoping to continue the discussions on the topic together.

@juliemoynat This is such a valuable reply and feedback for us, and asking some tough and important questions. We REALLY appreciate your approach here, thank you! All very, very good points and will be used to advise our strategy moving forward. We always want to do better, and hope to prove to you soon that we are.

@nextcloud thank you π I hope so! π€It may not always be easy, but it's worth it for the autonomy of disabled people and their full participation in society.

@nextcloud I very much appreciate transparency! I thought this might have been the reason. But, from my point of view, I think transparency would also be given in two less harmful ways:- With a screenshot and description.- With a transparent edit in the poll like this [Edit: ...]. (That would delete the results of course, but also the possibility voting on the matter of disabled people.)Probably I should stop discussing. I just share this ideas in case you didn't think of it.
