Ok, time to move email send out to #emacs. Is gnus the only way to achieve this? There are a few MUA but only one for composing and sending?

@mms I use Gnus. It works even though it can be incredibly non-intuitive and he loves to block the entire Emacs process.Still better than web interfaces, and I don't like mixing Emacs with other command line tools (I used mutt before) because shortcuts are different and it messes with muscle memory.

@galdor @mms I'm an old time mutt user still converting slowly from vim to Emacs. I might take the gnus route as I was not convinced by mu4e. I don't want to mess with mbsync. If you use IMAP, do you have an offline solution?

@mms Take a look at #mu4e, I'm quite happy with it.

@panmaster @mms Nope, pure IMAP which is not ideal with Gmail IMAP servers who are regularly very slow.I might switch to Gnus + isync at some point (I already use isync to mirror my IMAP accounts for backup).

@mms I use gnus for email, RSS, and NNTP. There's a high learning curve at first with all the jargon it introduces, but once you've got it set up you won't want to look back. I use isync to fetch messages and msmtp to send them which are configured via features in RDE/Guix in my case. I've also seen you can do tagging via notmuch, but I haven't tried it yet and solely rely on scores/ticking messages/org-capture for the moment.

@mms For composition, there are multiple ones: at least mu4e and mew come with their own modes, and a few options are listed in the `message-user-agent' docstring. For sending (with SMTP, sendmail, etc), there are multiple options as well, some of which are listed in `message-send-mail-function'. They are usually connected via message.el, which resides in the "gnus" directory, but not sure if counts as a part of Gnus, or rather a part of Emacs in general (but either way this is a single variable and interface connecting composition to sending, AIUI).

@mms I believe you are correct in saying there is only one Emacs interface for composing and sending mail but it is *not* GNUS. It is what you get by running the compose-mail command (bound by default to C-x m). Rmail, GNUS, mu4e, notmuch, etc., all use this same interface for sending mail. (They can provide additional behavior on top of it, but use it underneath). I think, not 100% sure.

@mms #mu4e is worth testing … build from source https://github.com/djcb/mu is recommended

@mms true, true. I use it together with msmtp for sending and mbsync for „getting“https://github.com/Stebalien/msmtp-queue
