@freedomtux what do you mean by including the word "today" in your query? When I have to review things, I will do a query like:https://www.google.com/search?q=serverfault+how+does+dns+work(q=serverfault+how+does+dns+work)and start piecing things back together in my mind. This won't cover more modern attempts to improve things like DNSSEC, etc.

@freedomtux If it were me, I'd start with the Cloudflare article.

@freedomtux At what level of detail?Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte talked about it 15 years ago and cover the user level aspects (scroll down about half way). Talking about your local host file, the DNS cache on your system, the cache at whatever DNS server you use and so on.https://www.grc.com/sn/sn-155.htmBut it doesn't cover the bits & bytes and obviously doesn't cover the more recent changes. But it covers pretty much what a user may want to know.

@IceCubeSoup Yeah fair - I was more hoping to make myself competent as a generalist - to learn the broad strokes and begin to actually understand different types of records as I am using them (with great difficulty) for my mail and hosted webapps:ATXTCNAMENSMX or whatever mail actually useset.al

@mhjohnson If I can understand fully the records I currently have on my domain's DNS table and interpret most common sections of host and dig that would suffice to start.
