This strawman assumes that the one of the world's youngest faith-based religions (atheism) must be right because it's "all too hard"?Further analysis:* Judaism: one torah with no significant alternative readings, and highly authentic Prophets & Writings* Christianity: same as above - one essential text plus two major Greek Texts (not 50) - essentially one is an Extended Edition from the Eastern Church with extras you don't need and isn't at all controversial.RT: https://mastodon.world/@jeffowski/111683305582942750

@freedomtux Atheism is by no means new, so thets just ignorant. Despite your misconstrusion, the comic shows how religious people can't form common sense due to circular reasoning stemming from the blind adherence to a faith they nearly never look into past the surface level. Abrahamic religions tending to be the worst of these cases, generally.

@binarywave Neoplatonism and stoicism is not atheism.Epicureanism is more like agnosticism with self worship (pleasure) thrown in.So yes, atheism as a religion - a deep personal conviction is both very new and philosophically wrought. My point isnt that atheists can't be right. Just that their "side" is like 0.5% of humans ever and so when they consider themselves smart by "checkmating" every religion - they are choosing to bat for a team that hasn't hit many home runs before

@binarywave The comic isnt really about atheism. Its a criticism of some of the lesser forms of theism. The tooter makes himself look philosophically ignorant by suggesting this is an argument for atheism."Abrahamic religions" is a moronic distinction when talking about authenticity of TANAK / the Bible. Islam has never claimed human authenticity - its own texts reject human authority entirely and the faith depends on the text which relies solely on the faith; not true for Judaistic religions

@freedomtux "My point isnt that atheists can't be right." - Sooo you're just as arrogantly sure of yourself? Got it..."Just that their "side" is like 0.5% of humans ever" - because China isn't a thing..." and so when they consider themselves smart" - you need a mirror "by "checkmating" every religion - they are choosing to bat for a team that hasn't hit many home runs before" - so like every religion checkmating every other religion despite all of their terrible track records?

@binarywave Hey tooting with character limits is hard.I tried to give face and suggest I am not claiming any superiority - atheists may very well be right, but their confidence has nothing to do with itBut if you're going to attack my character and assume the worst of my arguments, I'll have to retreat from this debate. Thanks for replying - have a nice life

@freedomtux You claim all that stuff, yet give ignorant counterpoints and straw men while crying against it. So I don't take your argument very seriously

@binarywave To try push the debate to another corner and not be at all antagonistic - China's large population now is kinda irrelevant when looking at all humans who ever lived - todays population wouldnt even hit 0.4% I don't believe. Humans are religious creatures is my point. Is it a survival mechanism and not something supernatural? Not for me to say, but it is a near universal truth.

@binarywave character limits, effort limits. Good for constructive debate, completely useless if you can't find any common ground I'm afraid.

@freedomtux your argument that 99.5% of the population is religious hinges on the assumption that they actually were. I can pretty damn guarantee you that if I were to go back to all of that history 99% of those people didn't actually give a shit about God or religion and we're pretty much forced to partake by the state and their culture. So you should probably just give that argument up right now

@binarywave I think you should look at that history for yourself. What you say was certainly true for some, say between the 1500s and the Reformation in England, and through a lot of Islams conquestismBut again thats a small minority across history. I never said everyone prayed to the same god every day - but religious - absolutely. I think you just havent quite got yourself quite orientated in your own background and experiences - you think very much like a post-Age of Reason thinker.

@freedomtux No, I just think beyond a limited European-centric historical context.

@binarywave My understanding is, which I am happy to be proven wrong :Before the Age of Reason humans typically didnt see a divide between physical and spiritual in the way we do now (self included) - if there was a question, or a mystery, supernaturality was always an assumed possibility. Squeaky door hinge at night? Aunt Hilda from the grave must be doing that (in reality an unknown draught and lack of oiling)

@binarywave Spoken like an Age of Reason European centric thinker. But point taken, many atheists engaged in ancestor worship in China but its ok cos they didnt really mean it /sI'm sorry, I couldnt help it.Point taken, and sincerely thank you for bringing this to my attention: my pre-1900 historical knowledge is pretty limited to the middle-east and Europe.I think thats as good a place to say - we're done here, no matter how tempted I am to put more snark onto the web. Thanks and bye.

@freedomtux Once again, a very Western lens you are filtering through. Gnosticism, Hermeticism, Druidic religious practices, Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, countless tribal religions, mesoamerican religions, faith traditions in Pacific-Island nations? Most older than the enlightenment. Your worldview falls apart pretty fast once you start to take a simple look at world history.
