Why are we using json-ld in the #ActivityPub world at all? Almost no application parses it, and even fewer seem to do it right. #JSONLD

@Qazm @steve Languages having core libraries that support Json-LD parsing would be a game changer. In our case we build upon WordPress and can't easily embed all third party libs that we want. And reimplementing the subparts we need is quite a bit of work. For now I dealt with the generator/compaction part and it felt exhausting cause I did spent much time on tasks I can't experience the benefit yet. @helge

@linos @Qazm @steve @helge Why do you need to implement compaction? The ActivityStreams spec https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-core/#jsonld requires activities to be shaped in compacted form, so reshaping is optional, I guess. Or do you need the rdf support?

@linos @Qazm @steve @helge That said, I find the future of linked data to be very promising.IMO, main obstacles have been a lack of funding since big tech & VC is understandably not so interested in things that undermine their bussines models. Also, rdf has a somewhat steep learning curve I'd say. Projects like ldkit.io or https://github.com/o-development/ldo are on their way to improve dev experience though (thanks to @nlnetlabs !), so I'm mildly optimistic.JSON-LD support in core libs would help a lot!

@laurin @linos @Qazm @steve @helge Although we would love to take credit for supporting open source project, fairness needs to say that Stichting NLnet @NGIZero does financially support FOSS projects.

@linos @Qazm @steve @helge @nlnetlabs People like Tim Berners-Lee and @cwebber (especially for ActivityPub) were very convincing in their promotion of linked data to me, I might add some links later, if I can find them :)

@linos @Qazm @steve @helge At https://activitypods.org/ we use a graph database to store activities, so the rdf support melds in very well and allows data to be reused in quite an elegant fashion. This way, it integrates with https://solidproject.org/ specs as well. All that is very promising on our way to more decentral web apps and taking wind out of big tech's sails.
