       Question #1: Does anybody use #nextcloud ? It is recommended by so many people...are there are other services that are similar? I'm looking at the various advantages - or not - of something like that over just getting more space where I am now. Purposes: hosting my WP, media files for my blog including vlogs, backup storage, possibly a future server but I'm not seriously considering that yet. (Sad story: backed up all of my photos from my daughter's formative years, family and friends that have since passed, etc. to both an external drive and CDs. Over time both failed and I lost it all.)

       @ChiaChatter nextcloud doesn't host wordpress.it's a separate software, provides you private cloud with photo storage. don't know about videos, but you can use it as web drive and keep whatever you want.also sync contacts.for backups - you need to implement that yourself. or when you setup a server, try to use two drives - configured as mirror, it is called RAID 1. it is convenient to do when you have your server at home, like i like to do.

       @ChiaChatter I use nextcloud on my shared server,I like it but my account will close when I die so all my files will go. So I  also keep local copies of anything that matters on a local portable drive.so far....so good.But technology keeps evolving and there is always the risk local drives will change.CD's being a classic example, we were told it was the medium of the future back in the day !Now I use them as coasters.Try it for a while and see.

       cd, dvd, bd - is most suitable for backups, does not require special conditions like tapes, have long enough lifetime, does not require power to keep alive, does not suffer from magnetic fields, moisture, DOES suffer from high uv.
