I still think modern social media shifting the focus from topics to people wasn't a great move. The way forums worked was that you opted into the things you're interested in and got a very low chance of seeing topics you disliked. And even if you did, not opening the thread was a surefire way to get rid of it from your view. Now you subscribe to people who will post about anything. You carefully have to consider if the things-I-like to things-I-dislike ratio work for you, but unless you're extremely strict you will get topics in your timeline you may hate. Getting rid of unwanted content takes substantial amount of discipline in who you follow and usage of mutes and word filters. The latter of which is, quite frankly, a joke. And I think this is the root for a lot of "discourses" nowadays.

@volpeon This is probably my one criticism of Bluesky’s feed feature actually. I’m subscribed to a feed for Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss content and most of it is fan art which is what I subscribed to the feed for, but because it’s finding basically ANYONE talking about the show, you will have someone moaning about the show’s popularity, its creator, and sprinkling their salt by jokingly saying how they’re going to kill themselves because they saw an ad for it on Prime Video (actual post I saw). It’s worse than Tumblr, where the person is deliberately tagging it to show their disdain to the community. Here, there’s no magic AI filter for “people who shit-talk this cartoon for stupid reasons”.It’s rare enough that I’d mute the person saying it but I think it plays nicely into what you were saying. Maybe if the feed creator had fine-tuned the feed to have just art, that’d solve things a bit, but I dunno.

It also doesn't help that unfollowing as a means to curate your feed is discouraged by the fact that a lot of people see it as an indicator of friendship. That friend who has annoying takes about a specific topic? You either put up with it or you have to explain why you unfollowed. You can't win.

@volpeon Should note that fedi will have this issue too, though the ability to follow hashtags on Mastodon might help a bit since it’s more like Tumblr in that regard.

@volpeon pahahahaha this is how I feel about Bluesky sometimes (though Tokimeki is a third party client that supports keyword muting)

@volpeon yeah but I think the major selling point of this (here and co) type of social media content is the constant stream of content in a single placeIt's like looking into the river for entertainment, if upstream is "polluted" or heavily filtered you will definitely feel itBut on the consumption it's much more passive than a topical forum/board where you choose what and where to look before even starting to scrollGiving choice paralysis sometimes tooImo :shibathinking:

@__Styx__@piaille.fr I think platform devs need to find a good middle ground. An idea I've pitched before is having multiple "channels" per user which you can follow separately, so there's at least some level of pre-filtering like with forums. I could for instance have a channel for art, another for tech, etc. The big problem would be people's laziness, because I can see them just having a single channel where everything goes.

@volpeon yeah people laziness is a massive factorI get the feeling most fedi user are a "bit" less lazy with the starting filter, but with some amount of obligations it could be greatly beneficialSay force to add alt text on every media by default and having blanks requiring more clicks would de facto train users on the good netiquetteSame could be done tagging starting toot, but obviously since conversation shift, individual toot in a thread should have editable tags to switch channel

@moffintosh@den.raccoon.quest No, I'm just pointing out a flaw in the design of Twitter-like platforms.

@volpeon Yeah, I do that calculation too. Usually just turning off boosts is good enough for me. Often it isn't really the topic itself but just how it is presented in a low-quality or intentionality contentious way to torque readers. I can't really word filter my way out of that.

@volpeon I do quite like the reddit/lemmy format, but it definitely suffers from being the secondary place to post stuff, probably because who you are doesn't mean much on such platforms, so it doesn't attract creators looking to build an audience.Maybe someone needs to find a better balance between the twitter-style social media and forums that still allows people to form direct connections seamlessly.
