       TIL.You can’t charge an EV when travelling without a smartphone (and the requisite app on the smartphone.)To buy gasoline, all I need is my wallet. Cash, credit, debit. You know, how we pay for everything else.WTF are we even doing here? Why can’t I purchase electricity to charge like I purchase any other fuel? Why are we complicating things on purpose?

       @Catelli @jpmens That is a problem specific to non-Tesla chargers. Tesla charging auto bills you. No app needed.There's also the problem where in some US states it's illegal to charge for electricity so you have the be billed for the amount of time your plugged in instead of the amount of electricity consumed.So it's not like you can go to every charger in the USA and say "I want to top up the tank with 5kW" like "I want to top up the tank with 5 gallons".

       @jpmens Yes, it's true. If you are not the regulated company that generates and delivers the electricity it's illegal to charge for electricity to other people in some states.I've attached two images: one is Florida where the SuperCharger rate is per kWh, and the other is Wisconsin where it's billed *per minute*

       @Hoss Again, it's illegal in many US states to charge people for electricity if you are not the power company so you can't literally bill them for the consumed kWh. You have to treat it as a service where you charge customers based on the amount of time the customer used it.I know it seems insane but they did this so people wouldn't buy electricity at the fantastic bulk rates -- say 4c/kWh and then sell to others at a discount of e.g., 8c/kWh when the general public would normally be paying 12c/kWhYes, the regular people get absolutely fucked on their electricity costs compared to industrial customers.

       @jpmens @feld same in France vs Germany. Don't know if for the same reasons. Though I do like the time based approach. Makes people hog chargers less.

       @FiLiS @jpmens oil is a somewhat "free market" in most of the world whereas electricity is extremely regulated in comparison. This is one of those unexpected side effects as we never expected people to be buying electricity in this way 🫠
