I've been trying out https://perplexity.ai recently for search - it's the best implementation of AI-assisted search I've tried so farIt runs multiple searches in parallel (using the Bing index) and uses the results to answer your questions, sometimes automatically running follow-up searches tooSimilar to Bard and Bing, but it feels like they've built a slightly more effective implementation of the pattern

It's not quite yet my ideal research assistant - I want something I can task with finding information that goes out and automatically does what I'd otherwise spend an hour doing myself - but it's hinting in that direction

@simon yeah it's okay. Can distinguish things etc. Maybe it's better if you ask for more Mainstream stuff and not local information.

@ErikJonker OpenAI have their own sort-of equivalent of Perplexity in their ChatGPT Browse mode, but Perplexity are managing to do it better at the momentSince Perplexity pay for OpenAI API access they're making a bunch of money off their work already!

@simon Since a subscription also gives you access to non-“copilot” (no search) prompts to ChatGPT 4, Claude 2, Bard, and Perplexity’s models, I’m seriously considering dropping my ChatGPT subscription in favor of Perplexity. Only thing I think I’d really miss is DALL-E, and I can mostly get that through MS’s new Copilot app.

@simon It’s also really interesting to compare GPT-3.5 plus web results against GPT-4. Even though GPT-4 is newer and presumably bigger, I get better information from Perplexity with 3.5.

@simon I think you.com is better when you use the genius mode, it can follow iterative task and visit up to 15 links from my limited test

@simon fair, but with something like this with a tight deadline and a lot of hard work to do if I miss the deadline I would rather get precise info straight from the original and official source rather than some intermediary
