Sandhill CranesLadd S. Gordon Waterfowl Complex, Bernardo, NMThe state wildlife refuge at Bernardo is a small jewell. Located about 35 miles north of the famous Bosque del Apache, this 450 acre refuge is also close to the Rio Grande. The last several years have seen severe budget cuts in federal wildlife and conservation programs resulting in less forage crops being planted. The State of New Mexico places high priority on conservation programs and has not only continued to plant high-value forage crops in its refuges for migratory birds, but has been investing in enhancements, such as a new waterfowl pool at Bernardo. The consequence being a higher average number of Sandhill Cranes at Bernardo than at Bosque del Apache. We stopped here last week on our way back from the Bosque. This photo shows only a very small group of cranes, but I love it for the gorgeous view across the fields at the Manzano Mountains.#SilentSunday #photo #landscape #WildBirds #WildlifeRefuge #NewMexico
