Which Linux distro for a fairly savvy user who isn't looking to be too in the weeds on everything?

@DrChris Debian or Ubuntu, depending on how savvy and weedy the user is. I prefer Debian, but work for a group that requires an indemnity clause in the license, so we use Redhat or Ubuntu at work.

@al_kali @DrChris Counterpoint: If you want to game, choose Garuda (an Arch variant). Arch otherwise. Most system maintenance is easy with a yay command.

@DrChris I've been happy so far with Pop OS. Stable, approachable, built in encryption if you want it, game friendly. Built on Ubuntu.

@mrman @BoredStupid @al_kali @DrChris Debian derivatives are great if you like to punish yourself by completely reinstalling your system from scratch once or twice a year. otherwise just use arch and do an Syu once in a while

@mh @mrman @BoredStupid @DrChris been running Debian for years and haven't had to reinstall the same host for a long time. Same for Ubuntu. Upgrading from Ubuntu 18.04 to 22.04 with only rebooting is possible too. Your mileage may vary.

@DrChris Debian is still for the people deep into weeds on everything. Ubuntu is decent but it is the only distribution I worked with since Slackware 1 (and I worked with most) that repeatedly irreparably killed my machines by poorly designed updates (twice over 6 yrs, both times it left devastation requiring install from scratch). For media server I'd still stick with it but not for general out of the weeds use. Best for general use RedHat/Fedora.No BS,works, wide support, easy for non-involved

@MaleticResearch Just realized a pin is broke on this CPU 😡 Have to order a new one - thankfully an old AMD chip that’s peanuts on eBay.
