Starting to strongly consider learning the violin after only ever really playing drums my whole life. Any advice / recommendations? Both for approaching the learning curve and also for choosing an affordable instrument?

@someGuyNick Make sure you have a tough shed in the backyard to practice in. Beginning violinists sound like a screaming chimp stabbing a cat. Your family will thank you.

@someGuyNick — consider renting to start, so you can figure out how into it you are and how nice of one you want to purchase.Let people know you’re looking for one. Someone close to me was given a violin by their private instructor for being a serious student. It was given to the instructor with the request it be given to a deserving student.Focus on excellent form from the start, often looking in the mirror or having someone else watch the angle of your bow, so the muscle memory is solid.

@MountainJay thanks! As an adult, I'm definitely much more interested and willing to pay attention to form and technique. When I started drums I just went for it and only concerned myself with those things much later. Wasted a bunch of time. Do you play?

@someGuyNick — I enjoy singing and did the same thing with that for years before I buckled down a took lessons and learned proper form. I shudder to think the damage I likely did to my vocal folds when just winging it at full volume.I sorta play the flute and piano, weirdly mostly enjoy playing scales. Also have a bass guitar I keep putting off learning. 😅

@someGuyNick — a close relative is a multi-instrumentalist and plays guitar, drums, sax, piano, uke, and violin (in descending order of ability). We spend a lot of time figuring out how to acquire, fix and set up instruments and audio equipment, and talking about music theory. He was given the violin, and a neighbor also gave him two valuable saxophones she wanted someone to play again. They needed repaired but are worth a lot now.People seem to like encouraging and supporting musicians. :)

@MountainJay Bass was my preferred next choice, but I'm trying to find a place in the praise band for church and my son has already taken interest in that. I can play piano but there's a bunch of pianists already. Very cool to have that musical talent in your family

@someGuyNick — it skips around here and there in our family. Definitely didn’t land solidly on me. Notice I said I like to sing, not that I’m a good singer. 🤣My maternal grandfather and grandmother ran big dance bands for cash on the side in the 40’s and 50’s.Violin would be a beautiful addition to a worship band. Mandolin would be neat too.

@MountainJay Very cool, hopefully you were able to retain some of that history! Yeah it seems like the next logical addition, I know the band leader would love to have one but there's not many musicians in this town, less Christian violinists. Seems like a good calling if I can commit.
