When I visit my physician, not a mask in sight, other than the one I am wearing. Vaccination rate in my county is extremely low—less than 20% Non-vaccination rate correlates with Trump voter rate, which was about 85%. Quite a few of these are former students (or their parents or siblings). I TAUGHT SCIENCE!! I feel like a failure.

@Yorgus I don't blame you. I remember when Mom dragged us all to the doctor to get polio shots, because so many of our little classmates were getting polio and never returning to school! I remember smallpox. Good god, back then, vaccines were, literally, a lifesaving MIRACLE! WTH has happened to humans?

@thepoliticalcat Yup, I'm old enough that I have had at least THREE rounds of polio vaccine (Salk, Sabin, Salk2, etc.) plus boosters over the years. Since I spent a few years in Taiwan in the 1970s, I've also had shots for Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Typhus, Cholera, and a zillion gamma globulins. I had measles, rubella, mumps and chicken pox as a kid, but I got an MMR shot a couple of years ago--just to be cautious. I've had SEVEN Covid shots, flu shot every year for the past 15, and RSV this year.

@thepoliticalcat My parents were ultra-paranoid about polio in the early 1950s; one of Mom's best friends spent her adult life in a wheelchair as a result of polio. Remember very well the fear.

@Yorgus @thepoliticalcat I am a #PolioSurvivor who got #polio via live vaccine & I still support #vaccines. I don't think my rare case, very low percentage of ppl like me - reason to be against vaccines. They save billions of lives. No vaccine is 100% protection but it increases chances of survival & it has helped many from getting illnesses that are preventable. I don't take my awful experience personally. I see the bigger picture. It's bigger than just ME.Wish ppl understood this w/ #Covid

@Yorgus @thepoliticalcat I am paralyzed for life from polio. That doesn't mean that I believe going around telling ppl to not get vaccines - because I suffered horrific side effects. I always look at bigger picture. I'm a tiny anomaly. Billions of lives were saved. It has never been about any single individual. It should always be about greater goods.
