I am once again dealing with people asking me what an event could do to prevent a rapist attending said event if entry is managed by volunteers and the bare fucking minimum is you tell the people checking the tickets what this person looks like and if they show up they are to call an organiser and let them handle it

Should a volunteer be required to handle an awkward social situation? Absolutely not. But that doesn't mean you can't handle the situation, and if you don't have procedures to handle the situation then what the actual fuck are you doing

Even if you're on team "We can't prevent this person from attending unless they've been convicted of a crime", you still need a mechanism to prevent that person attending. The state isn't going to magically solve that problem for you.

tl;dr: you need a procedure to prevent someone you don't want at your event from getting in through the front door. If you don't have that, you shouldn't be running an event.

@mjg59 I am particularly baffled that somehow checking tickets can be done, and presumably turning prospective attendees away if they do not in fact have a valid ticket, but that somehow it is impossible to handle any other criteria for turning someone away....

@chandlerc My recollection is that the flow is purely "check barcode, provide wristband" so it is certainly effort to provide additional filtering there, but the choice of auth flow is down to the organisers, so?

@risottobias C3 tickets aren't associated with names so it can't be immediately dealt with at that level, so you do need the front-end people to do some more in terms of filtering attendees who have valid tickets

@risottobias My recollection is that there are no names and individuals can just legitimately resell tickets to others so given the current infrastructure it isn't trivial to just flag a ticket holder

@risottobias Yeah the choices they've made make this harder but that isn't a reason to punt it

@mjg59 if they actually banned him and the other rapists he runs around with, they would have no shortage of bouncers. As a bonus, these people are competent programmers and digital security trainers who belong at CCC events. I will gladly sit outside in a woolly jumper drinking coffee waiting to tell Jake to fuck off. I’m not alone. I’d get a lot of knitting done.

@mjg59 imagining how happy that same crowd would be if there were a constant presence of uniformed cops to do the required gatekeeping for keeping that person (or, tbh, persons) away

@mjg59 @risottobias having the people at the entry do the check won't work that well, as currently they're only checking if everyone has a wrist band and that's done by probably more than 50 different volunteers. Do you hand each of them a bunch of photos of who's not allowed? Also recognizing people that you only see 2-3 seconds on a photo probably a couple years old will be hard when you've got 14k people walking past you.I do hope the orga finds a solution, but it will be a challenge.

@tokudan @risottobias Handing them a bunch of pictures would be better than the current situation and would at least be an indication that there's a desire to prevent someone attending

@mjg59 @risottobias Wait, so C3 tickets are basically a scalper's dream?Why are they even a thing then?

@mjg59 Not only the entrance but you should be able to handle any nasty situation drunk or drugged attendees, T-juiced people etc, at least until the police arrives. In fact these are the three most dangerous types anyway.

@mjg59 at CCC scale you probably need a different solution to that. But you can still have some sort of solution.

@mjg59 Having read some hundreds of pages of guidelines about what "safeguarding" means these days, and having discovered that I would have to pay my own lawyers if I wanted to find out what any of it actually meant in real life, I eventually decided to decline the invitation to become a trustee of a charity. Which, amongst other things, would have involved being responsible for the policies and procedures for stopping nasty people getting in the door and messing with the "vulnerable" people. Sure, some boiler plate Ps&Ps were on offer, but I wasn't going to pay for my own personal audit and it would have been my arse on the line.

@mjg59 @froztbyte Britain's music/night time venues were also slow to deal with these issues, and now this is *exactly* what they have in the remaining ones as well as compulsory ID-- scanning on entry (and many others have gone out of business as people are socialising less due to the combined effect of cost of living, pandemic risks and not feeling safe)

@mjg59 Honnestly the flux of people is insane and volunteers barely have the time to check that wristband exists, I doubt that with the current logistics they would be able to recognize the face of someone they never met before. That being said I wonder how big of a concession it would be to have nominative tickets.
