Seems odd that there’s an official GMail app for mobile, but not for desktop. I mean, the web UI is very good, but an app would be better. Standard mail clients can talk to gmail, but with missing functionality. There’s only one app built on the Google mail API (Mimestream) but it’s yet another subscription.

@shacker The purpose of GMail as a web app is to kill the entire idea of a dedicated email application.

@kboyd Is it? Then why is there a native mobile app?

@shacker The purpose of mobile apps is to kill the idea of web apps. This sounds like a contradiction, but I don't think it is. Think of how macOS has been getting further and further locked down & moving towards mobile concepts.Under the banner of usability, control is being taken away from users.(These two posts sound like BS, and they absolutely are. But there may be a kernel of truth.)

@kboyd I cant say I agree. In some cases that is a side effect, sure, but certainly not the “purpose.” If gmail web is the main event for desktop, then they certainly don’t have a desire to kill the golden goose by making an app for mobile!
