       Slavery was only part of it, as it was part of the South's economy.  The South had no industry and the North did.  Northern companies didn't like the Southern plantation owners shipping their cotton to England.  They were getting a better deal from England than what they were getting from the Northern companies.  The slavery issue was shoe-horned in, and it was a good time to do so.  Yet, no one bothered to address the slavery in the North.  The companies paid low wages, charged rent for company housing and high prices at the company store.  Invariably, workers went into debt, to the company store, because their wages weren't enough to cover the cost of living.  (St. Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go. I owe my soul to the company store)Northern companies wanted the federal gooberment to force the South to only trade with them and not seek better prices elsewhere.  Lincoln could've freed the slaves without a Constitutiomal amendment.  Read the Preamble.  "All MEN are created equal..."  Men = Mankind.  Declaring the blacks as human would've made jim crow laws impossible...but it would've gotten Lincoln shot sooner.  The Rothschilds wanted the U.S. split and were poised to fund the English takeover in the North and French in the South.  The bank wanted to charge Lincoln 36% to fund the war.A Gen. pointed out the Constitution and Lincoln printed the debt free green back.
